Option-drag your EXSSamples folder to the external drive, delete the
original folder then scan all your drives with project manager. Don't touch
the Sample Instruments folder as it should be left where it is now.

That's right, no need for aliases, the samples can be anywhere.

You can move the sampler Instruments folder also, but you DO need an 
alias pointing to that though (with the alias renamed sampler 
instruments, not "sampler instruments alias"

To relink the EXS with moved samples it's really worth getting redmatica 
EXSManager if you have many samples.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
