Samplecell Convert

2001-11-02 by Eli Krantzberg

Hi All,

Just joined this list, and am looking forward to getting involved in the
EXS community. I have had the EXS for a few months now; and while I love
it, have not quite been able to give up my trusty old Samplecell ll card
yet.

I have to say, I find the samplecell conversion incomplete. It seems to
work fine for basic multisample mappings, but doesn't seem to convert
envelope and modulation settings properly. A good case in point are the
Distorted Reality CDs. Has anyone else had these problems and/or found
any workarounds? What about other conversion programs from Samplecell to
EXS (Chicken Systems?); are they any different/better?

The DR stuff is hard to do. I haven't done any AB'ing of the Translator
operation vs. the EXS native one, but we are always wanting to hear what
people think about it, especially if some files can be sent with some
descriptions on the problems. We use this file-reporting facility to
constantly improve translations.

Hey Garth. I'm I correct in understanding that Translator now converts
SoundFont filter/mod data in addition to the raw sounds? It didn't the last
time I tried this, but somebody mentioned on EXS users that it does.

Thanks,
Jer

DR (Distorted Reality) SampleCell has alot of unusual workarounds we did to
try and make the envelopes smoother. Alot of the more esoteric modulation
options aren;t possible to do in the EXS. Nowever, resetting the EXS ADSR is
pretty easy and straightforward.

Just for reference, the AKAI version of the Distorted Reality libraries
converts very well with the stock EXS conversion.

It's "leaking" into the new 2.5 beta that is out. But actually, Translators
doesn't do SoundFont->EXS; it's a hole in the scheme that will be filled
shortly. We didn't do it right away because of the EXS's capability. (If
there's a bevy of complaints/dissatisfaction/need of features, do a
Denial-Of-Service to our e-mail and let us know.)

What happened is that we created a huge (comparatively) algorithm that
examines the amplitude envelope, filter cutoff, and resonance, and creates
groups to ajoin the Zones to give the Zones that individual capability;
plus it cuts the amounts of zones and groups down to the bare minimum; PLUS
it writes global parameters as deeply as possible. For example, if a Zone
wants a certain combination of filter envelope settings and filter
settings, and another zone wants a different type of setting, the algorithm
seeks either the best compromise, or just doesn't write it if it's too
weird. (There are people wanting an automatic "group-per-velocity range"
feature, which we are trying to horn in the whole mess. It's good idea, but
it's just a organizational tthing, since the Zones "do" velocity as is.)

This is on the Akai stuff now; and it's just a matter of time to adapt it
to the Roland, Emu, Kurzweil, SampleCell, and Ensoniq translations. Oh, and
the Soundfont one when it comes out.

CDXtract seems to do this with the "hi-res" translation in their new 3.6;
but I don't know how deep it goes. It can be a black art, especially when
you have to cheat so much with the EXS's global scheme.

>Just to let you know - Translator has a problem with large
>soundfonts I talked to the compony and they are working on a fix .

Can you e-mail us back on this; our fault, I think your request fell
through the cracks, because there isn't a SF->EXS translation in the first
place. Was that SF->Giga? (The problem there is that a .gig file can only
take 127 Instruments max, and some of these "super" SoundFonts have
numerous Preset/Instruments, and split files would have to be necessary.)

Oh, and a trailing question: In the blue editor, what is the common setting
for the "master volume?" Is it -12, or is 0 OK? Or does 0 clip, or is it
too hot? What do you think?
