Factory CD disappointment

Factory CD disappointment

2000-10-24 by Colin Shapiro

I just received my EXS24 free Factory Sounds CD.
Quite frankly, I'm VERY disappointed.

I don't have time right now to criticize the sounds in detail. On a
lot of the Instruments, I feel there could have been better use of
layers, with far more dynamic and tonal range. Often the tone of the
original sample is very harsh. Even a simple trick like varying the
amount of attack on a plucked instrument would make it sound better.

Yes, I did audition the sounds dry, with reverb, with chorus and
other FX where applicable. I feel that I'd have to do some serious
EQ'ing and layering to get the instruments to be where I'd want to
use them for a job. I think in this day and age, users have come to
expect far more ready-to-play-out-of-the-box sounds. Some of the
synths would have been barely acceptable even back in the 80's. I'm
not afraid of jumping in with spanners and hammers and working on
sounds - I've been doing it since I bought my first DX7 in 1984. I
just would have liked not to have to "lie under the engine" - rather
just "get in and drive away".

I sincerely hope that Emagic gets their sample conversion to include
Roland format so that I utilize some of the superb CD's I have from
Spectrasonics.........

Regards - Colin
