I have this message when i try to save over a previous version of a song
where the properties of the song file is checked "read only" , i usually
just check "archived" and uncheck "read only". I don't know if that
helps or not.

Matt,

Thanks, that's it. Somehow, when I transferred all my files to the
new PC, they were converted to read only.

Did you transfer them using a CD-R? That's probably why - they are written
to the CD with the Read-only attribute automatically put on - or is it when
they are taken off? Is there an override for this?

I don't know if you can stop this from happening when you write to the CD-R
but on PC you can remove the "read only" attribute on a whole folder of
files simultaneously in Explorer -- just right click on the folder and pick
"Properties" the attributes are near the bottom just uncheck read-only.

This is only true for WinME and up. With 98 it only works if you mark a file
or a bunch of them directly.
I installed a little tool called "DelAttrib QuickHack" which allows to reset
all attributes for a complete folder under 98 too. Could look for the link
or post it if anybody wants it.
Apart from that, whenever I'm transferring files on CDs I usually zip or rar
them up, so when unzipping/raring them they won't be write protected any
longer (using rar audiofiles even get compressed to almost 50%, another nice
thing).

Cheers,
Sascha

Oops. Yes you have to open the folder, hit Ctrl A to select all and then
change the attribute on Win98 and SE.

Once it's on the HD that's right, but I always wondered if it was possible
to have the burning software not write the Read-only on the file system, or
if that is mandatory with the ISO spec or Joliet spec.

I don't think this has got to do with the burning software but with the fact
that Windows (don't know about Macs) simply thinks that it won't be able to
write onto a CD drive, so all files automatically are set to read-only as
soon as they're coming from whatever CD.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
