I just downloaded it and all the audio files seem to show up as simpletext
documents (I'm on a Mac). So the exs instrument can't see or load the samples.
I assume you are on a PC? The Mac OS just doesn't seem to see them as audio
files.

Anyone else have any luck with them?

This is probably your Mac FTP client set for ASCII download instead of
binary, or something along those lines. The Mac clients are very
customizable and you no doubt have a setting that's overriding what is a
default for other Mac user. I, for example, don't have this problem. I don't
believe it's a Mac vs. PC thing at all.

Same here, is it possible to have them as .wav?
What kind of file were they originally?

looking forward to hearing the samples,

Check the FTP preferences. What FTP client are you using? Fetch is a very
easy-to-use and stable piece of software.

Re: [exs] Sharing a string Instrument

2002-02-11 by Michael Karlsson

OK I checked it out now.
I downloaded my own file.
Do like this:
Put the fileextension .aif last in the filename of every sample and it will
be right.
But maybe the EXS wont find them then.
What should I do?
Do you want me to upload the instrument again (right this time) or will you
solve it by yourselves?

Re: [exs] Sharing a string Instrument

2002-02-11 by Sascha Franck

Thanks Michael!

Just downloaded the patch, the only problem is that Windows allows no "?" in
filenames ("Cello Ab-1 B\ufffdttre?" for example). WinZip even didn't let me
unzip them, fortunately WinRar did the job, it only replaced the "?" with a
"_". Will see what Logic is doing with that, most likely it won't find the
samples... and whenever that happens as the first sample the EXS tries to
find you don't have any other option but to press "Continue" which will stop
the EXS's sample searching completely. Uhm! Also, while the EXS would find
files without any fileending, on Windows it doesn't allow loading them - so,
assuming it doesn't find the samples there's no way to get them back in but
to add some fileendings and load all of them manually, which is what I will
do now.
Bah, instead of assuming I will just test it right now....

****TEST****

UGH! As said, the EXS only finds *some* samples. The ones with the renamed
letters of course aren't found at all, but even worse, some zones are badly
detuned (like around a halftone). For example, there's one sample named
"Strings Ab0" which seems to be almost one wholetone out of tune.
Weird stuff going on there!

Anyways, I will now rename all the samples to .aif and then remap the
instrument's zone.
I could then post the updated patch, so Windows users should be fine too.
And then, Windows users should use WinRar to extract the files, WinZip just
won't let you do it.

Apart from that, the samples seem to sound VERY nice from what I can tell so
far, so it's most likely worth all the effort!

Thanks a lot,
Sascha

I just put up the M.K. Strings, and I converted them into 44.1K .wav files.
They were sd2 and AIFF stuff.

Go to www.chickensys.com/exs or www.chickensys.com/esx for a new list.

If the people who contribute stuff could make sure their instruments
conform to the following, it'd be a little easier on this end:

The EXS files should have the .exs extension
The samples should be .wav (with the .wav extension) or AIFF (with the .aif
extension). Please remember that renaming and/or converting the samples is
not enough - you must revise the EXS file to point to the right names.
Put in a readme file that describes the instrument

Don't download files from ftp.soundcentral.com/pub/unsorted - that may not
always work.

C O N F U S I O N ! ! !

I was just renaming all the files to .aif but Wavelab (which is usually
opening everything) didn't let me open the files at all, keeps telling me
I'm trying to open an unknown audio format.
Then I tried with .aiff and .wav - all to no avail!
What format are those files in (Bitdepth/Samplerate)?

Ok, I just tried loading everything in Logic, wanted to reorganize the
patch, and now (?!?!?!?????): Logic was loading the renamed samples when I
selected them manually. But unfortunately, all loop informations are lost
when reloading a sample (I allways complained about that, but the EXS still
is loosing this and other information on a reload), so I will now have to
write down everything before loading them manually :-(

Anyways, if you plan on exchanging patches with Windows users in the future,
you better avoid \ / : * ? " > < and | in filenames.

Hm, really confusing.

Sascha

And, as said in my previous post (which just went out of my mailbox before

Avoid the following characters if you don't hate Windows users:
\ / : * ? " > < |

Oh shoot. I forgot this too. Good catch Sascha. Can you put the loop points
in? The original .zip file is now off the server, and I erased mine. Upload
at your convenience.

Re: [exs] Sharing a confusing string Instrument

2002-02-11 by Rubber Chicken Software Co.

The reason that the loop point were persisted is that SD2 files have the
wave3data in the datafork, and the loop info in the resource fork. When
they were zipped, the data fork was put in, but not the resource fork. So
the SD2 files were simply raw data.

The EXS is rather nice - it simply needs a reference to a file, and just
uses the data. On import, though, it wants to write into the Zones the loop
info etc. On the Mac, when the EXS was ready to read the CD2 resource fork,
it could and imported the settings in nicely. But when it's taken away....

The EXS file submitted had the loops from the SD2 in there. But once we
redid it, at least I lost them.

Garth,

The first part of the link M.K. Strings - self-extracting file for PC users
points to http://www.chickensys.com/bin/m55_vibraphone.sit instead of
http://www.chickensys.com/bin/mk_strings.exe, which is then right in the
second part.

Thanks a million both to you and to Micke for this. And thanks to James,

Thank You.

I just wish I had something to given in return for all your contributions...

Hi there,

> I just wish I had something to given in return for all your
contributions...

Well... get busy... :-)

I have a general request for sounds.

Anyone who owns a Nord Lead, a JP8000 or Access Virus.

Can you make a few aiff or wav files of some of the more squelchy,
grindy presets, zip them up and pop them somehwere for me to drop
into an exs instrument?
If you are feeling diligent, can you sample every 3rd note?

I'll drop them into an exs instrument, set the loop points and such.

I'll be sampling my new purchase over the next few days, which is a
Waldorf Pulse Monosynth.
If I come up with anything interesting I'll let you know.

Here's the corrected patch for those getting the wave'ed version:
http://www.saschafranck.de/exs/MK_Strings.zip

Btw, in the lower registers I noticed some detuning, but for now I didn't
bother correcting it, was enough to copy all the looppoints manually. The
higher registers seem to sound fine though.

Thank you Sascha.
But everything is wrong!!!!!
Before I read your mail I already sent a correct version to:
ftp.chickensys.com incoming

It´s _not_ posible to get it now from:
ftp.chickensys.com pub unsorted anymore!
They blocked it!

You have to wait until Garth Hjelte puts it into
www.chickensys.com/esx
I put the correct files there at 00.19 sweden time.

You had better wait until the right stuff comes there.
Tomorrow maybe?

What a nightmare this turned into!!!!!!!!!!!!

The strings are not perfect but they work well in a context.
And there are som great violinplayers playing.
Sorry guys.

has to be one .zip version at your site
I don´t want anyone to hear what I heard when I downloaded my own version,
and tried it!

This became a nightmare to me , but I certainly have learned how to sit.

No - it was great, it was our fault that we didn't see what needed to be
done. But now that we've learned, it's cake.

No sleep here... It's up now, corrected. www.chickensys.com/exs

Fixed - thanks. www.chickensys.com/exs

Since RAR is so effective in compressing - it takes it down 50% with no
loss, I wanted to make that available.

Btw, there's an UnRar tool for Mac as well, it's somewhere on their site. Of
course that doesn't work for SFX archives - or am I wrong?

Just like you said, WinRar is kickass in compressing and I'd like to use it
for my uploads, but in the past I've been experiencing problems with Mac
friends so I went back to only zip the files.

Regards,
Sascha

Cool - if RAR is available for Mac, let me know. That'd be great. I don't
have time to search for it.

Sharing EXS Instruments and converting to MP3

2002-02-22 by Michael Karlsson

Much talk about sharing instruments and converting to MP3 so I made a little
thing on this.

I made a short song containing shared instruments from many on this list and
put it as an .mp3 file.Converted with Itunes (192kb/s) at:

http://homepage.mac.com/WebObjects/FileSharing.woa/wa/default?user=michaelka
rlsson&templatefn=FileSharing2.html&xmlfn=TKDocument.2.xml&sitefn=RootSite.x
ml&aff=consumer&cty=US&lang=en

What a link huh!
Maybe its broken: If so, you have to copy and paste.

The file is called: loss.mp3

The sounds are:

Rougin Rhodes & Rougin Jazzbas from Stefans page:
http://vidavision.com/entertainment/stefan/

My own strings and Elis Vibra at:
http://www.chickensys.com/exs/

Dawn from Saschas page:
http://www.saschafranck.de/exs/

Drums from the (by now) famous Akai ftp site:
ftp://ftp.akaipro.co.jp

My daughter Mimi 17 is the singer and composer.

Check it out if you have some spare time.
Just for fun.

[exs]Looping

2002-02-25 by Dan Chapman

Maybe an obvious question....

How do you turn on a loop on the exs24 so that when you keep the key
depressed it will continue, instead of being a single instance?

Try with "Loop" on the zone you have open. Check it and off you go.
May also have to uncheck oneshot.
