I'm sure that Eric will chime in (and he certainly can speak for himself). I
don't believe that this library is created by Eric. Ilio is distributing it
but it is a different company (from Europe) that is creating this library. It
certainly looks like it will be awesome. I've heard that it will be awesomely
expensive as well. I've only read rumours (as there is no real pricing info)
but the full library is expected to run about $10,000 US. There will be
smaller bundles which are more affordable form the prelim info that I've read.
It does look like it will be amazing though.

Best regards,
Fernstudio

p.s. - I remember Eric stating on this list that they are looking more at
creating apps (such as Stylus, Atmosphere, Trilogy rather than sample
libraries) in the future.

Don't you think it can be better to have a real orchestra ?
seriously , where is the orchestra sound !! ?? in a magic box ? :)

I've download few demos and it is incredible how humoristic it can be !
so many energy spent in a product ...Ppffff

I'm sorry, maybe I look agressif but I'm sick to see that kind of stuff and
how people want to let you think that it sounds like a real Orchestra ! it
is not an help to let you think like that ...

please go to a real "Orchestra concert Hall " , listen to music and learn...
it will cost you less and will be much better !

Correct, the Vienna Symphonic Library has nothing to do with Eric or
Spectrasonics. It's being produced in Vienna, Austria by the Vienna
Symphonic Library and being distributed in the Americas by ILIO. Igor's
skepticism notwithstanding, ;) it will be a groundbreaking library. All
announcements of pricing and release dates will be made at the AES
convention October 6, right around the corner. Meanwhile check out their
website: http://www.vsl.co.at to get the real scoop.

Yes but it won't cost you less when you want to book them. Besides they
won't fit in my little home studio. The tuba and Timpani alone would be
trouble enough.

Hi ,
i'm not septic in the product Mark, It sounds like the other Orchestra
product and it is good to be able to hear a "kind" of Strings Oboe Tuba
sound :) this is just my Point of view.
I prefere to have a "price reduction" ticket to rent a real Orchestra !
the "Vienna" name is off course a marketing way to sell something to
someone...
In Vienna, there is good orchestra and Bad orchestra, Vienna is a generic
name for nothing ! it is like the "America orchestra" :) it means nothing...
and for a cd rom, is the Quality of an orchestra important ? I mean to play
notes 1 by 1 a 10 years old boy can do it !
it is a bad way to speak to people... people are not "MOW" ! you know :)

It is not because I bought a PEN that I'm a book writer.
It is not because I buy a brush that I'm a good painter.

What is the "PLUS" in VLS ?
where is the better value in the product ?

not true Dan...
some student from "High Music school" can help you for free sometimes... and
they are not so bad ! in music...
there is possibilities to be played today, it is just a n opportunity
question and to be around in the Orchestra bussiness....
1 contract with real Orchestra can get you an entire carrier in Orchestra
Music and a real personnal satisfaction :)
cd are "Ersatz" :)

I don't blame anybody here of course but I think it is better to never
forget that CDR ar NOT a real Orchestra.

Hi Igor,

I feel compelled to respond to your inaccurate posts. I'm sorry to say that
your comments are coming off in a very rude manner. Based on your comments,
I'm guessing that you really haven't checked out this VSL project much at
all. I think you need to take a closer look at that VSL website. (Let me
state again that I have absolutely nothing to do with this library, and don't
make a penny off of it....I've just been checking out their process and the
project and I'm blown away at what they are attempting here...it's nothing
short of mind blowing in scope).

You statements are WAY off the mark and show very little knowledge of
sampling or of orchestral sample libraries. Sure working with any live
orchestra is great and always preferrable....but since this is a forum about
sampling, then let's stick to the topic..OK? Your argument is silly....sure
ANY real instrument played well is always better to have than a sampled
simulation....but there are obviously many people who find it very useful to
have samplers to do mockups, orchestration, education, demos, film trailers,
commercials, low budget projects, etc.....this shouldn't be news to you.

With sampling orchestral instruments in particular, the quality of the
musicians is incredibly important and the location of the players often
affects the end result dramatically Professional String players in Hollywood,
London, or Vienna each have a unique and identifiable sound and playing
style...and there is a HUGE difference between sampling amatuer players and
pro studio or concert level players. I've done it both ways and there's no
comparison. Only the musicians who have a masterful command and control of
their instrument, plus a great tone and expressiveness (with large doses of
patience and good temperment) can make high quality multisamples. It is a
rare to find all these qualities even amongst pro musicians.

The more you learn about this incredible VSL project they are doing, you will
see that there are very few cities in the world that could even attempt a
project of this magnitude. It would be unthinkable to do in the US for
cultural reasons alone. This is by far the most impressive ( and expensive)
feat of sampling ever undertaken. The sampling sessions for each musician
went on for 6 months to a year or more! (normally sampling sessions are from
a couple of hours to a week maximum for any library) 45 highly skilled people
editing 1.5 million samples over a several year period....Custom orchestral
sampling soundstage and recording studio studio designed and built just for
this project!.......geez, at least show them a little respect by not being so
negative about it....it takes some serious balls to attempt something like
this, and I for one salute them for the amazing thing there are doing
here.....there is really nothing else on the market like it.

Just go to the site and read about what kind of magnitude this thing is (5
TERABYTES guys!) and you'll see that this is hardly a "marketing"
gimmick.....that's really an insult to the dedication these people have put
into this thing.

I know that I'm very curious and excited to check it out more in depth at the
upcoming AES show.

The one thing that really caught my eye about this product was that it is
announced for EXS native format (among others). Eric, do you know anything about
how they are going to make this sheeer quantity of samples manageable in
something like the EXS? How are the EXS instruments going to be layed out to
deal with multiple articulations, velocity crossfading, etc.

it is not some negative thoughts, it is a reflexion about sampling/orchestra
....

I've got respect for the job of people but I don't see your point ...
it can be 45895698 terabytes too.
It sounds like " who's got the bigger ! " :)

But I'm like you, I will wait to try the Library and play with...

sorry if I've disturbed the EXS List , my apologize to all.

Desole Igor, but I for one do not accept your apology.

That's because I don't think you have to apologize!

We should all feel comfortable enough to be as critical as we want
concerning new librairies/approaches. The last thing I need is to have this
forum become so tame that we all fear a professional like EP coming down
hard on us if we dare to share our opinions with the group.

Go ahead and disturb - that's how we remain vital.

I don't know....maybe Mark from ILIO knows.

True, and I'm a firm believer in quality versus quantity. In this case,
theres a strong likelihood that it is both...which is truly extrodinary. When
you see *why* this concept needs the space....it's for all the articulations
and in-between the notes stuff....which is where are the current orch
libraries fall way short. Also, you will be able to buy it in all kinds of
flavors, big and small. The advantage for the pro composer is that all the
articulations and phrasings are available for each instrument in every
dynamic if you want them. If you don't need them, then you'll be able to get
it more like a normal library for less money and expand from there. (At least
that's how I understand it...Mark can clarify this if I'm wrong. I'm sure
that much more detail about the pricing and structuring will be announced at
AES.) It's really the ideal thing that everyone has been asking for....a
flexible, expandable, upgradable and more importantly "matching" set of every
articulations of every instrument in the orchestra. Pulling this off is no
simple task, which is why I really admire and respect this effort they have
made......extremely impressive.

No worries Igor! Your opinions are totally valid, and I agree with much of
what you said...I just wanted to set the record straight about how truly
incredible this thing is going to be.

All the best,

I agree 100% Ned.....everyone should feel free to express themselves
here....it's an open forum. I just wanted to pass along more of the info I
know about the project, so that people have the right idea about it. MY

All I can say for sure is that Vienna's software people have been working
with Emagic to address the issues of dealing with such a large number of
articulations and performance elements. The end results promise to be
great for both the library and for EXS users. More info will be
forthcoming in October.

Calliope samples

2002-08-29 by Sean McCoy

I have to do an arrangement of a song called "Midway," and I'm looking for
a real beefy, authentic calliope sample or similar. Kind of like the sound
of the big carousels at Disneyland or the Santa Monica Pier. Anybody have
any leads on these? TIA

While playing with the new NN-XT sampler in Reason— I discovered a long
wished for feature
Samples on the same note can alternate on a random basis when played.
If this becomes a feature in the Exs-24, will this library be able to take
advantage of such a
feature...? I have wished for this since longer than I wish to remember.

Thanks

I suppose one could fairly easily achieve this with velocity transform +
router, no? Although I suppose we'd have several variations of the same
note at the same loudness, and not just what's already offered in most
librairies (p, mp, pf, f)...

Anyone, NN-XT is a very cool sampler - too bad Logic's not reached ReWire 2
yet. C'mon Emapple, there's a lot of us Reason users out there (or
wannabe's waiting for the word).

Ned

PS: I wonder when we're going to see a new environment in Logic, one more
like MAXMSP?
