Sample start point in sample editor , can it asigned to a midi controller ?

In the EXS mkII there is indeed a Sample Start parameter in the
modulation matrix that does just that. However, people who've
actually tried this (as you could have :) have discovered that this
parameter only allows you to move through a fixed (= limited) number
of samples (and a rather small number at that, if I remember
correctly). So if you want to "scroll" through a 2 minute sample,
you're out of luck.

Just a comment for this thread:

I tried it within the Instrument editor, while playing a looped sequence:
open the loop/sample editor (dunno its exact name, click on "E" icon) and
set the sample start point manually while Logic plays notes.. you may hear
the changes immediately.. not so elegant as it would be with a "Sample
start with full length range" function, but very effective!

BTW, E-MU EOS samplers also have the same behaviour when modulatin sample
start...only a few samples. Sample Start modulation may be very useful for
creating single cycle loops (any basic waverform, like e.g. a saw waveform
with one or two full wavelenght) and modulation here produces interesting
phasing effects and variations of a simple oscillator.

My experience is that it plays about half of a sample, something I've been
able compensate for by adding dead air of equal length or more to the end of
the sample. Not useful for looped wave forms, but good for non-looping
samples. -Jer

Hi Hendrik Jan,

Do you by any chance know why in the worlds name so many of
the controller #'s in the EXS's source list are 'not available'..?
I can imagine this being if Emagic had already assigned these
cc's, is this the case...?
....Or am I the only one here experiencing this?
Thanx,
O.

To clarify, I should say "half a zone" and not "half a sample".

I recall, maybe correctly, that a number of about 60 are pre
assigned. I think ( 60% sure) I read that last in the exs24 update
manual version 1.0 of june 2001.

I found out the hard way something you folks may already know...

In the Song Settings: MIDI Options, there is an option at the bottom of the
window, that can disable the ability of controllers 65 and up to affect the
EXS24 group selection. You can select version 4.x behavior, which reserves
those controllers for plugin automation, or you can leave all controllers
available. Could this be the cause of some controllers being "not available"?

That's it!
In earlier posts I emphasised the suck-factor of the Emagic
manuals (with the exception of my 3.0 manual, which was big
and chuncky and very thorough...) and this says enough again...

Phil, thanx for clearing this up!

Re: [exs] Sample start point in sample editor , can it asigned to a midi control

2003-01-12 by midiface <pshackleton@apu.edu>

Happy to help!

Now, a question: is there any simple way to copy an entire setup of audio
instruments with the EXS24 samples and programs selected?

I have lots of older Logic songs that I'd like to move my current EXS24 default
setup into.... but there is still lots of work to do after a normal environment
layer import.... when it works correctly at all.

Thanks for any help on this!
