You need to use the 1.3 Apple CD/DVD driver, the new ones see the audio and don't report the rest of the CD. Get it at www.chickensys.com/translator/download, put it into your Extensions folder, enable it in the Extensions Manager, disable the old one, restart, and it should see it. Don't use the 1.3 for long, the 1.4 ones are more stable and reliable, but of course not in this case. (Is there a FAQ for EXS?) Garth Hjelte Sampler User

There's a Logic FAQ (in development) at http://www.omega-art.com/logic/faq/. Clearly EXS related stuff belongs there as well. I've marked theabove msg to be included in the FAQ (which will be updated once I have some time to get at it). For the record: I suppose the above pertains to *akai* mixed mode CD's, right? -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra <h@...> Omega Art: http://www.omega-art.com/

As far as just the EXS goes, Akai is only relevant. But it applies to any mixed-mode CD paired with a proprietary format, specifically Akai, Roland, Emu, Ensoniq, Kurzweil, Yamaha, a few others, in regards to programs that can read them. The specific problem is that the 1.4 CD/DVD Driver, once it sees the Audio portion (which physically comes first), it fails to report any other track to the OS, thus it is unavailable to be accessed programmatically. The use can see that (when not in EXS or other) by noticing that you don't get the eject/init dialog, even though it's an Akai CD, whereas normal Akai CD's get it. The 1.3 drivers report other tracks to the OS, making them available to programs. Since this is a Mac problem, it affects every Mac OS8/9 program that seeks to read Akai/proprietary CD's. I know of no way around it, except to writer something very unnecessarily complicated, like a very low-level driver that essentially replaces the CD/DVD Driver. And even maybe that won't work. Anybody have any recommendations for a good source of funk/hip-hop and rock rhythm guitar loops? I've seen lots of variety discs out there, but I'd prefer libraries that are heavily or exclusively guitar. I'm sure the Hans Zimmer discs have great multisamples, but do they also include an ample supply of loops? Any suggestions appreciated. Sean McCoy Oregon Sound Recording

Hi Sean, Sean McCoy wrote, > Anybody have any recommendations for a good source of > funk/hip-hop and rock rhythm guitar loops? I wish that I could help you with recommendations but I can't (I usually try to get a live player in when I need such things). I can give you info on the Hans ZImmer though and let you know that these do not contain an ample supply of the types of loops that you're looking for. I own Hans Zimmer Guitars Vol. 1 and have heard Vol. 2. Vol. 1 has what is called Chromazones which essentially are the same loops played in every key but they do not have a huge variety and I've never used them to tell you the truth. You are correct in that these discs have *great* multisamples though. Sampleheads have some stuff but I think that the loops now are a bit dated and probably won't give you what I think you're looking for. Good luck with your search. Fernstudio

Based on your response and the lack of any others, it would seem there is a gaping hole in the market here. Live guitars are obviously the best, but unless you're in a metropolitan area and have some dough, it's not usually an option. Decent lead players are plentiful, but seriously good groovemeisters are very hard to come by. All you good rhythm guitarists out there, get working on those discs 'cause there's gold in them thar loops!

Is anybody having any problems with the use of external firewire drives for disk streaming? My internal drives are rapidly filling with converted sample libraries, and firewire is the obvious way to go if it can handle it. I'm using a G4 450MP on Mac OS 9.2.2 (for another six months or so, anyway). Thanks for any recommendations. Sean McCoy Oregon Sound Recording

(dono which drive actually sits inside, but i think they are changing anyways)

Has anyone noticed that these drives power up automatically when you boot your copmputer (in OS 9)? It will power up even if you left it powered down before you last shut down. I find this very strange behaviour, which apperntly is now considered normal (?) It seems t he only way to not have it power on when booting your Mac is to physically unplug either the firewire or AC cable. I, for one, don't like this behaviour. Otherwise they are great, reaaallly quiet drives. -- Eli Krantzberg Nightshift Orchestra / Almat Productions http://www.nightshiftorchestra.com
