EXS (or Logic) loses timing everytime a new channel is selected

EXS (or Logic) loses timing everytime a new channel is selected

2003-08-05 by YAVUZ AKYAZICI

Hi everyone,

I would like to ask everyone about this.

Every time I select a new channel using (Logic Control or Mouse),
Logic goes out of timing. This more true for Virtual instruments like
EXS and EVP etc...

I wonder why nobody says anything about this.
Could it be that it is only me who is experiencing this?
I thought it was the same for everyone since this has been going on for
a long time.

This was the case with my Windows system.
Now, OS9.2.2 and OSX 10.2.6.
They are all the same.

My question...

Is there anyone who does NOT experience this problem.
Or... is there a fix.

It is really annoying..

My understanding is that Logic's audio engine still uses a low latency/small
buffer regime for the selected instrument and a higher latency/larger buffer
regime for everything else. This way you get CPU efficiency overall with low
latency response on an instrument you are playing or editing. The old trick of
making sure no virtual instrument is selected when bouncing to preserve CPU
headroom is pretty well known.

The downsides of this would appear to be:

1) Logic STILL does not support live playing of multiple instruments
simultaneously. Chainer, Cubase and a million other hosts will do this but not
Logic. It is not even feasible to have two copies of Logic and use the second
one on another machine to run a bank of Emagic virtual instruments driven by
input from a midi cable.

I guess that some time this century Emagic will decide to scrap the two tiered
arrangement with buffering (they might at least offer that option) and allow
all instruments to run on low latency and support live midi
performance/control of multiple instruments. This might also involve some major
changes in how Logic handles incoming midi information.

2) The adjustment in timing that occurs when Logic switches between these
regimes when an instrument is selected ( another instrument is often deselected
at the same time).

Murray
