I'd say, that's the least appropriate way to do it. The volume pot has a huge impact on the guitar tone, that is a way to control gain (to the pickups) than output volume. Big time difference. My suggestion, as others have already mentioned, use a different patch with slighly boosted volume/gain (or other tone parameters like EQ, if you like) to achieve the effect. Remember the GSP is a multi-fx module, there is plenty of patch space in there... I use a Triaxis feeding the GSP, so my lead tones come from different patches within the Triaxis, thus maintaining the GSP fx section parameters unaltered and the patch-change time of the Triaxis I believe is a bit faster than that of the GSP, though it probably depends on the patch you're using on the GSP.
