JJ's from front to back. 2 12AX7 JJ's in the 2101 and 8 EL84 JJ's in a Peavey Classic 50/50 Power Amp. The difference between decent brands of tubes in 2101 is marginal at best. Some switch a 12ax7 for a 12at7 but I have never tried or heard great results from doing so. What else is in you signal-chain? A tube power amp helps me out with the 2101's lack luster clean sound. And I added a BBE 462 Sonic Maximizer after the 2101 to remove that sterile flatness of the 2101's clean tone. It punches up any style of tone you put through it. The speakers and the design of the cab is a big part of your sound too. Size, Wattage, Open Back or Closed Back Cabs all affect your tone. For that old classic clean tone you kind of have to look at how they did it back in the "Old Days". A low wattage 12" open-back rig with not too much head-room, will give you just enough break-up before it distorts to put life into your tone. The power amp section has a lot to do with getting that rich tone, hence my Peavey 50/50 Classic power amp in the rig. I can mess with the Presence and Resonance of the power section with a couple of knobs to change the character of this Peavey. I can go from Razor-Blade Bite to a more Mushy feel with this power amp. I think when the clean signal gets processed in the 2101 it loses that juicy, glassy, Fender/Vox tone that I like to hear in a clean guitar sound. I know you can bypass the digital section of the 2101 but something in the analog section is not giving it any sizzle. I also know that the pre-amp tubes in the 2101 aren't pushed as hard as in a classic amp design. I think the 2101 punts it 12ax7s with 50 Volts whereas the old designs bash them as hard as 200 Volts or more. Don't quote me on the actual Voltages but the juicy amps run way hotter. I've never gone to the 2101 for that Killer Tone. It's hard to get around the fact that a simple tube rig, "No Digital", is the only thing that will do it for me. That being said, the 2101has some massive, expansive cleans with some patches. But that's more attributed to the great effects one can layer onto that plain slice of toast that the 2101 serves up for a clean tone. I haven't fired up my 2101 lately to actually give an educated opinion on its' sound compared to what I play now. I know I won't get rid of it though. Whenever I go back to visit the 2101, it still puts a silly grin on my face. Maybe it's the visions of Big Hair, Tight Jeans, and High-Tops I see when I look at the backs of my eye-lids. Sorry, no settings to give you of the top of my head but EQ the hell outah her and try some post processing. Thanks for making me revisit an old friend. _____ From: gsp-2101@yahoogroups.com [mailto:gsp-2101@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Glenn Warner 3rd Sent: Monday, November 09, 2009 9:09 PM To: gsp-2101@yahoogroups.com Subject: [gsp-2101] Tube Poll I have a question for all users in the group. What kind of tubes are you using and what style of music? Currently, I am using JJ's from Bob at Eurotubes. They sound pretty good. I play rock/metal, Dream Theater being my favorite group. I'm not really super happy with my clean tones my unit produces. The distortions are good, any one else have some good clean and good solid saturated tones/settings they wish to share?
