RE: [gsp-2101] Recommend me a great tube power amp.

I have a similar amp, a Mesa Strategy 400 Stereo. I agree with you that
I’ll never need another amp; Mesa’s are built like tanks. Mine has 4
12AX&’s 4 EL34’s and 8 6L6’s. I bought mine because a friend of mine
had one and I liked it and I had bad experiences with Marshall as far as
reliability (many failures, sometimes at gigs). This one has been
running fine for almost 15 years and I bought it used. It weighs as much
as a boat anchor though. - Mark

I use a Mesa-Boogie Simul-Class 295. They are no longer in production,
and nothing has come close to this baby since. It is a tank-I don’t
have a clue how I could put a dent in it…and it has the sweetest,
warmest, fattest tone I have ever encountered in a dedicated power amp.
Has both 8 & 4 ohm outputs on each side, can be driven stereo at 95
watts per side or bridged mono. Has 2 EL34’s per side, and 2 6L6’s
per side; can switch each channel from just the EL34’s (Class A mode)
or all tubes at once (Simul-Class) for stage volume. In my apartment,
on the Class A mode, with the gains set at 1/10, you can hear my amp
from space-I cannot imagine what kind of nuclear testing site would be
required to run this thing wide-open.

Look for a used one of these babies on e-bay…that’s where I got mine.
I’ll never need another power amp.

Thanks Greg
Lots of good pointers!
I've also considered getting a small tube amp (not just a power rack)
so I'll look into the DSL201!

Cheers
Sean

I'm using a Marshall DSL201. It's a 1x12 combo, all tube (12ax7s and
EL84s). It is perfect for my gigs (small to mid size, we do classic
rock,
reggae, Steely Dan, etc., very wide range of sounds). This Marshall
lets
you drive the power tube to get that TONE without killing people. I mic
it
to the board for bigger rooms and to control FOH mix.

Right now I've relegated the 2101 to effects loop status because I'm
using a
Fulltone Fulldrive II overdrive pedal on the front end. I do not use
this
Marshall's distortion channel for the most part because it is rather
harsh
and nonarticulate (like most modern high gain amps). However, with the
clean prevolume on about 3, the master on 10 I get wonderful, full clean
tones. The 2101 digital effects sound beautiful. When I engage the
Fulldrive, I get nice crunchy/bluesy overdrive. I go to the "boost" on
the
Fulldrive and go into Allman Bros territory.

The other reason the 2101 is now in the effects loop (ie., I don't use
it's
analog section or distortion) is that I've found going straight into a
tube
amp front end, even with the Fulldrive, lets the guitar volume control
how
much drive you get. In this way, I can set the guitar volume at 6 or 7
for
crunchy rhythm sections, then roll it up full for the leads and fills.
The
2101 tube preamp does not seem to respond this way nearly as well, and
it's
lost when that signal is fed into the amp input. I've tried that "y
cord"
dual setup described in the 2101 Artist manual, with no useable results.

The DSL201 is small, lightweight, easily upgradeable with alternate
tubes (I
like the JAN/Phillips NOS 12at7 and the JJ EL84s) and speaker. The down
side is you can't hook up an external speaker cab. However, if you're
mic'g
to the board, the extra speakers are only for stage ears.

Beware the DSL401 which is this amp's 40watt big brother. I believe its
the
same basic amp with higher output circuitry, and therefore much hotter.
Lots of folks have reported problems with the 401 (overheating causing
traces to break, solder joints to fail, etc.). The 201 get plenty warm,
but
no problems (I've had mine for 2 years, plenty of gigs, rehearsals,
outdoor
gigs, etc. and no problems).

Sorry for the long post, but buying an amp is a big deal (at least to
me)
and thought this might be helpful.

I'm considering buying a better power amp for my 2101.
At the moment I mainly run the 2101 straight into the board.
(I do small gigs for a living)
But sometimes I like bringing my Marshall 4X12 to get some vibration
if
you know what I mean! ;-)
I currently have the Marshall Valvestate which does the job but after
hearing my stuff through
a tube power amp I couldn't believe the difference in tone!!
(this was just using a Fender Deville for power by-passing it's
preamp)

I don't need HUGE power, just something that sounds great & can do
small/medium gigs with.
Oh and for recording as well.
  There's a local who's selling a Marshall 9000 series or something.
50 watt stereo tube for $300 CAD which is about $200 US
He said it was an older Marshall?
These any good, fair price?? I think he'll go lower too.

  Thanks
  Sean
