The battery is in there for a stable voltage to run the system clock which consists of a quartz crystal and associated circutry. Plus it supplies voltage to any volitile memory there may be in there (e.g. your user settings). If the battery dies you no longer have a stable system clock so naturally the programming will go to crap since it relies on counting ticks so to speak from the clock.

Dude I'm telling you it's more than likely the freaking battery. The same one your PC has. You know that button battery about the size of a quarter? They are less than two bucks. Replace the battery and do a factory reset. At the worst you'll be out $1.50. I can guarentee you that any 2101 that you get will need a new battery by now even if it sat in the original box opened, unless it has been changed in the last couple years. A lithium battery has a shelf life of around 10 years...do the math.

Hi,

I've been reading your gsp2101 saga from the sidelines. If I may offer you
some advice - if a master reset didn't do the trick, I would stop right
there, contact the seller, let him know he sent you a malfunctioning
machine, and arrange for a refund. While it's true you -might- find the
cause of the problem by opening up the unit and poking around, it's also
true that you may ruin your chances of ever getting your money back if you
-don't- find the problem. If I were the seller and found out you had opened
the unit, I would not give you your money back.

There are lots of good and reasonably priced 2101s on the used market.
Don't settle for junk.

Anyway, my $.02 from having been in your shoes once and learning the hard
way. Best of luck.

-Bob
