Hey,

Everyone should email digitech and tell them to bring back the 2101.
Can't hurt. Here's the url:

Subject: Re: [gsp-2101] 2101Edit Program

Hi Jeff:

Martin Ecker wrote 2101Edit (version 1.1) back in 1999, when Windows 98
ruled. Unfortunately, his program does not operate reliably under more
recent versions of Windows. Although you must have version 3.00 EPROMs
to use 2101Edit, this does not guarantee its successful execution.

Because DigiTech did not release the specifications for the System
Exclusive message used to transfer algorithms between the 2101 and a
computer, Martin cleverly resorted to a "button-pressing" scheme. When
you finish building an algorithm using 2101Edit, Martin's program sends
a sequence of System Exclusive messages that simulate button presses.
When receiving these messages, the 2101 thinks you are manually entering
a new algorithm using it's front panel.

The main problem with this approach is that the 2101 needs varying
"breathing" times between consecutive button presses. If you're not
careful, it hasn't finished processing the last button press before
another one comes down the MIDI cable and so the 2101 ignores it. This
means that any subsequent button presses are out of sequence and the
whole algorithm building procedure is jeopardized. You've tried long
times (500 ms or more) between consecutive button presses, but I see
this didn't help.

Another problem is that sometimes the 2101 interprets a single System
Exclusive "button press" message as two button presses, and so again
you're out of sequence.

We know of these problems because we tried to replicate Martin's scheme
in our 2101 interface for our MIDIWizard software. The feature was not
sufficiently reliable that we wanted to release it. I hope this
explanation is not too long-winded for you. I just wanted you to know
that its not exactly Martin's fault that his 2101Edit program is
unreliable.

Keep in touch,
Graham Pearson

create new algorythems graphicly, on the pc, them dump them to the 2101.
This is great. The algorythem creation ability was one of the reasons I
wanted a 2101 in the 1st place, but then found it very dificult to do
with the limited display on the unit.

which was being displayed at the time of the dump. I alsways end up
back where I started - nowhere, and then usually the 2101 edit program
locks up.
