I have to tell you all I have owned a 2101 ver 1 since '91, which I
only recently updated to ver 3. I will never part with it, as it is
amazing sounding in my studio, but sometimes you do not want to have
to move a big rack. I needed something smaller & easier to set up
quickly to use in a church worship band. I wanted options to go
direct or use an amp, & I wanted amp & cab modeling and software for
sound editing. I bought a GNX2 in 2000. It is a sort of swiss army
knife in that it does many things well.
But it is all digital, and as such does not sound as smooth and
sweet as the 2101. You can edit the sweetness in-to some extent.
It is best used with a small tube amp.
The GNX2 has amp & cab modeling, great efx, a basic preset drumbox,
pedalboard & processor/editor in one small unit, simple OS, fine
free software editor, patch sharing via internet. It's all good.
But for tone alone, and powerful efx, the 2101 is KING in the studio.
I've been using the GNX2 a lot for different gigs for 4 years live &
I love it a lot.
Recently I bought a Vox Tonelab SE pedalboard (with a tube in it!),
and it is very cool, kinda different, more tubey sounding & very
easy to program 'cause it has knobs and more analog style controls.
They all (2101, GNX2, Tonelab)work great, but sound different, and
have unique tricks each will do.
The 2101 kinda pre-dates modeling and software editing. It came
before Roland VG's and Line6 POD's which really started the modeling
thing, and software editing and internet patch sharing.
But for sound it is awesome!!!!
