No More Spam

2008-04-27 by gdmpearson

I've just been promoted to moderator for this group. I've deleted all
of the recent spam messages and I hope to trap all future spam.

Unfortunately, Yahoo doesn't make it clear whether or not I
can "audition" each new member to make sure they are a legitimate GSP-
2101 owner.

Please let me know if I can do anything to improve this forum.
Regards,
Graham Pearson

First of i would like to congratulate you on the promotion. And thank
you for deleting the SPAM that has flooded the Board recently.
Its high time this is done.
I dont know how the Board operates for new user to sign up, but perhaps
if there is any way you have the ability to add a feature like entering
a hexadeciaml code during sign up or a general question like whats the
best preamp studio tbe by digitech?Obviously the new user would enter
2101 but for spambots they arent able to fill in these random questions
as they're not programmed to do so making the sign-up unusuccessful.
I hope you get what i mean as its a lil long-winded..LOL!!

Anyways good luck and congrats again Graham Pearson!!

Graham,

Just FYI. I moderate or own a few other forums. There is a way to make it so that you have to approve every person who signs up prior to them being allowed to post. The way we screen people on those forums is to send out an auto-mailed questionaire that asks about the type of gear they own. If they don't reply within 48 hours or don't seem to have any business in the group, we reject.

Regs,
Jeff

That'd be me and Bruce who own the TA list and this is one of the groups I was referring to. :)

Unfortunately, Yahoo is not yet allowing me to "audition" new members
before they can post messages. So I apologize for the crap that just
got through the gate.

As soon as Yahoo let's me know how to be a gatekeeper, I'll be able to
cross-check each new member.

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: No More Spam

2008-05-01 by Jeff Hayes

Graham,

It's pretty easy.

Login to yahoogroups.

Click on the list name in your groups.

Click "Management" at the bottom of the list on the left.

Click "Membership" on the right hand side.

Click "Edit" next to the "membership type and welcome message"

Select "restricted" membership.

If you wish to have an additional message go out with each autoreply to people trying to join, then use the "Additional Messages" options. You'll need to upload that message you want to go out into the Files section for the group. Once that's done, you can add that outgoing message for the "Pending Membership" portion of the group.

Here's the details on that:
Click on Files on the left-hand side of your Group's web page. Then click either Add File or Create Text File, depending on whether you have the file already saved on your own computer or you want to create it on-the-spot. In either case, under Auto-Send To Members, you can check the box for Upon Joining Group. Make sure to follow the rest of the directions on that page, and click on Upload File or Create File in the lower-right-hand corner when you're done.

Hope that helps,
Jeff

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: No More Spam

Hi folks:
I got a reply from Yahoo. They told me there's no way I can "audition" new members to make sure they are legitimate GSP-2101 owners and not just spammers. But at least I can ban a member after the first time they spam us.
So bear with me. I'll make it as difficult as possible for a spammer to send crap more than once.
Graham
