Uploading of GSP 2101 patches to laptop?

Uploading of GSP 2101 patches to laptop?

2011-07-17 by Neil Rego

Hi,
It appears that I may need to remove the lithium battery from the unit ,which would entail in my presets being erased.
Could you let me know how I could upload/transfer the existing patches from the unit onto my Laptop, prior to the reset being done.
I have a Dell Studio Laptop.Slots available on the laptop are an Express Card slot,8-in-1 media card reader,Audio In Microphone Connector,Audio Out Headphone connector
Cheers,
Neil

I too need to back up all of my patches but y'know I bought my 2101 brand new back in the early 90's but never got around to getting the whole MIDI thing down.

Seems most sites I've come across give a very generic explanation and/or history of MIDI or they assume the most basic functions are understood, or rather "obvious".

Any advice or recommendation on a good primer in MIDI basics would be appreciated, especially anything that deals directly with our 2101's.

Thanks.
Chris P.

None of the software packages Dieter lists on his website work with recent versions of Microsoft Windows such as XP, Vista, or Windows 7. Only MIDIWizard works with all versions of Windows 98 or later and it includes all of the features incorporated in the early software packages listed on Dieter's site.

As I understand ,patches 1-100 can be edited and those from 101-200 cannot be edited.

When the lithium battery is removed, which would entail a reset, which patches would I stand to lose?

Neil:

You will lose patches 1 - 100 (user programs) when you change your battery.

MIDIWizard makes a backup of all user programs 1 - 100 and any associated user algorithms. When you restore your user programs, you can restore them all in one operation or you can select each program from your backup and assign it to a different user program number on your 2101. This gives you the opportunity to rearrange your user programs if you wish. Whichever restore scheme you choose, your user algorithms, if any, are restored together with the corresponding user programs.

Factory programs (101 and higher) and factory algorithms are not backed up because they are not lost during a battery change and they can not be edited.

I hope this helps.

Oh yeah, I do actually have a Tascam MIDI to USB interface
but alas I've never used it. And I have a Windows7 i5 machine
              w/8gb memory. Pretty capable machine....

I too need to back up all of my patches but y'know I bought
my 2101 brand new back in the early 90's but never got around to
getting the whole MIDI thing down.

Seems most sites I've
come across give a very generic explanation and/or history of MIDI
or they assume the most basic functions are understood, or rather
              "obvious".

Any advice or recommendation on a good primer
in MIDI basics would be appreciated, especially anything that
              deals directly with our 2101's.

Thanks.
Chris P.

                    Hi,
It appears that I may need to remove the lithium
battery from the unit ,which would entail in my presets
                    being erased.

Could you let me know how I could upload/transfer the
existing patches from the unit onto my Laptop, prior to the
                    reset being done.

I have a Dell Studio Laptop.Slots available on the
laptop are an Express Card slot,8-in-1 media card

You can do a sysx bulk dump (and subsequent restore) of your 2101 system data using Cakewalk/Sonar if you happen to have it installed. I assume there are other software titles and midi utilities with similar function.

It's not too difficult (Disclaimer: this procedure is partially from memory).

Assuming your Sonar version is like mine and that your 2101 is properly connected to your computer with a midi interface of some sort(midi in and midi out):
;
In Sonar open a new normal project.

Go to Views menu > Sysx.

In the Sysx window click the toolbar button that looks like a downward red arrow (Receive Bank)

In the Recieve System Exclusive make sure "" is highlighted.

Click OK

Now on your 2101:

Press the "MIDI" button.

Press the right arrow "Next" button twice.

Press the "2" button.
;
Press the "1" button.

Wait for the transfer to complete.

Save the project file in Sonar with some name like "2101 backup".

When you are all done with your battery change:

Open your Sonar project.

Go to Views menu > Sysx.

In the Sysx window highlight the bank that contains your 2101 data.

Click the upward facing arrow (Send Bank).

Wait for transfer.

Enjoy your 2101 with fresh battery.
