So if you couldn’t load the RAM with proper SysEx data for patches, this can be the reason for the garbage on the display. Display itself can be OK. Unfortunately K5 has no reset, so the only possibility is to load proper data through MIDI.

There is a synth guy on US ebay from Japan that has allllllllllll of the synths.  I would hit him up.  If you can't find him let me know, but I am guessing he has one in pristine condition lying around.  I am always jealous of his offerings haha. I wish you luck and thank you for the info.

As I have two K5000W and K3 for additive sounds (plus lot of Yamaha FM/AFM stuff which can produce such sounds to some degree), I’m not forced to get K5, just if there’s some chance :-)

Japanese second hand shops are good source for instruments in good shape and for good prices, but until now I haven’t seen any Kawai there…
