K5 Parts Unit

2017-08-17 by janegimble75@...

Well, I give up. After having the memory battery replaced, it now just puts up garbled characters on the screen or nothing at all kinda like when I got it. Too much time into this beast. I give up. If anyone out there in K5 land needs a parts unit or wants to deal with this thing let me know. I feel like $10 for the unit is fair and you pay the shipping (which is what will kill us both haha). I apologize if this is posted in the wrong place but I after coming so far and being shoved backward off a cliff, I am beyond p&(*$ed and just want this thing out of my house and hopefully into a home that will get something out of it. We can work out the details if I hear something. Thanks.

Don't need another K5, but for anyone interested, you might have a lot of cracked solder joints on the power supply (quite common problem).

HiYou say "garbled characters" on the screen? Have you or someone else done anything to the lcd?

Re: [k5synth] K5 Parts Unit

I'm looking for someone to test an led display upgrade on a k5. Before you sell it , maybe you could try this display. Garbled characters could mean that someone attempted a backlight replacement and couldn't get the display reassembled properly again. Unless you are aware of another problem with the synth, that could be the problem.

Re: K5 Parts Unit

2017-08-17 by janegimble75@...

I appreciate the helpful responses but here is the deal of what happened. Got this thing a couple of weeks ago from some guy that had it outside waiting for trash but saw me picking it up and decided it was somehow worth $20. Fine. Spent the next week cleaning a literal rat nest out of it and cleaning all of the tiny bubble cups to the buttons and every single part of the keybed. Got all keys and buttons working and display was working fine just all patches said K5Single. Fine I will do a reload. Nope turns out two traces on midi in had been eaten by something but I soldered those back together. BTW there are three wires soldered randomly between chips on both motherboards (not me) so it probably had issues at one point. With midi in fixed, I went onto loading up patches thru sysex with no luck across all possible software platforms as noted in previous post and like so many others. It is a 1.0 rom so I am pretty sure that was the issue. Got the system battery swapped out and now it has gone crazy. I am going to try a different battery tonight and will report back tomorrow, but am indeed pretty through with the unit. I did not like the signal flow and it was just different than I thought. I have a PH50 that I love anyway, so will stick with that :) Thanks to all the hopefuls and helpfuls :)

Hi Mo,
The screen was working okay and displaying characters properly when I got it. The EL backlight was burned out and yep could hear the high pitch squeal of the inverter that everyone mentions. Hopefully the replacements have a modern LED backlight that does not require high voltage and can just draw from the normal 5V or 12V that is usually floating around. This guy has some replacement screens http://www.ebay.com/itm/BACKLIGHT-LUZ-DE-PANTALLA-O1W-o1w-K2000-MPC-K5-i3-T3-A80-more-NEW-LOWER-PRICE/271057465604?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649
and I have bought from them before to repair my MC505 no problemo. I would look to something like that as I was eventually planning on getting rid of the inverter board and the noise as it was not necessary for operation. Thankfully this is a model that is dotmatrix vs proprietary LCD chars so there are options. I would have to look to see if it is serial or parallel but guessing it is parallel due to age of the unit. I would be happy to test out your replacement screen for you, I just hope it would not be cost/time prohibitive to you and your K5. If I am misunderstanding something or if I can help with your screen let me know :)

Synths whose displays were interchangeable with their el versions like the Korg i3 and 01w, are not always compatible in their led upgrade versions even though the controller language is the same. So if you want to try the led displays I have on your K5 and give feedback to me you could have the led display and I would be able to verify that it works. My feeling is it will probably work but if it doesn't, it would probably just be a question of cutting a trace somewhere or adding a resistor.

Are you sure you have loaded proper SysEx data? Does instrument make sounds?

P.S.: Here is good web page about K5 with lot of info:

P.P.S.: If you are in Japan, I can be interested in your instrument :-)

I feel like $10 for the unit is fair and you pay the shipping (which is what will kill us both haha). I apologize if this is posted in the wrong place but I after coming so far and being shoved backward off a cliff, I am beyond p&(*$ed and just want this thing out of my house and hopefully into a home that will get something out of it. Hi Mo,
Yes I am familiar with what you are talking about. I had to do something similar with a Roland I had at one point. I would take you up on your offer, but am pretty sure it is a chip that was damaged during the battery swap. I wouldn't want to waste your time and money if the display chip on the mobo is damaged and wouldn't ever display proper chars. I would be happy to test if you really think that it is the display that is damaged and not the mobo chip.

Hi Daniel,
Thank you for the info but I tried his sysex (and Alesis's, MIDIQuest, Opcode, Cakewalk, SMF thru Cubase, MidiOX etc) loader to no avail including slowing transmission rates and millisecond delay. I could never get any ack signals from the K5 but is would send all other midi messages.. Yes it is a great site :) The button cleaning guide is top notch. Sorry, I live in the US. As you can imagine, shipping would require a second mortgage haha. There is a synth guy on US ebay from Japan that has allllllllllll of the synths. I would hit him up. If you can't find him let me know, but I am guessing he has one in pristine condition lying around. I am always jealous of his offerings haha. I wish you luck and thank you for the info.

Re: K5 Parts Unit

That's not how the display works. The characters are generated by the display driver on the display board, and data is fed to it from the main board. Chances are the display is bad or misadjusted on the board.

Re: [k5synth] K5 Parts Unit

2017-08-18 by Daniel Forró

Garbage on the display can be caused also by garbage in the RAM. We still don’t know if that instrument behaves normally concerning the sound making. So IMHO it’s too soon to say that display is damaged.

So if you couldn’t load the RAM with proper SysEx data for patches, this can be the reason for the garbage on the display. Display itself can be OK. Unfortunately K5 has no reset, so the only possibility is to load proper data through MIDI.

As I have two K5000W and K3 for additive sounds (plus lot of Yamaha FM/AFM stuff which can produce such sounds to some degree), I’m not forced to get K5, just if there’s some chance :-)

Japanese second hand shops are good source for instruments in good shape and for good prices, but until now I haven’t seen any Kawai there…

Do you have any other t6963c based displays from another synth that you could swap out as a pretest ?

I guess I misspoke. I am familiar with what you are talking about. Oh I see I did say mobo, my bad. Yes, you are correct, the data gets shipped to its driver chip on the display board. Oddly enough it seems to be getting worse. I thought maybe letting it sit overnight and have the battery voltage "settle in" would hopefully stabilize the boot process but it is just doing the line to the screen and sometimes chars and sometimes just a cursor in the upper left corner. Pressing bank buttons or cursor buttons only spins it out worse. Does that sound symptomatic of the driver chip to you or something more sinister on the motherboard? Thanks for clarifying for everyone and sorry about the typo.

Daniel, would I fix the garbage data in RAM by pulling the battery again to do a reset? Thanks for the help :) If everyone is following along I have cooled down a bit from the early surprise. It is close but I feel like I am missing something simple gaaarrrrgh haha. It did actually make sounds prior to this but I will say that when I messed with the balance to build a sound, Generator 1 was really nasty with almost FM style distortion-that nasally high buzz one gets with high resonance and open cutoff in FM synthesis. Generator 2 was what I would consider "normal" in that it produced tones without artifacts and consistent throughout the playable range with stable tones :) I would be fine with it the way it is. That is what got me so hard about this, should have quit while I was ahead lol. Let me know what you think about the battery reset. I will do some tinkering tonight.

Mo,
I do not have another to test with. I will try doing some basic diagnostics tonight: continuity thru ribbon cable, display voltages, etc. I don't have an Oscope for data but usually just check to see if it is pushing any voltage when changing functions. Are their any pointers you can give or things to watch out for with this display? Thanks for the kind offers and help :)

Well you said it was working before. Can you post a picture of what it looks like now ? Maybe it will show something diagnosable

Sorry Mo I cannot get a decent picture. It does something slightly different every time it boots. Sometimes it is Matrix-style strings of vertically arranged @ ! ! @ @ @ $> and so forth alternating with a blank vertical column 1 character wide. It then fades to blank (not activated pixels) in about 1 second. The whole thing from click of the power is 2 seconds long. It sometimes goes to dark (all pixels activated) and just sits like that. It seems the rest of the synth is working as I was able to play notes (thought the timbre was horrible lol). I did find the schematic, so I will take a look at it tonight and double check the mobo around the battery area to make sure I didn't damage anything by accident. I have found exposed wires in the parallel cables early on and covered/repaired them properly, but I should look further. Whoever had it before me did some very elaborate chip to chip repairs but also did some garbage-level repairs, which complicates things. And the literal rat(s) that lived in the thing in dude's garage at some point. There are many layers of possible fail in this bad boy haha.Any thoughts or insights are helpful and much appreciated :) Yourself and the others are very nice to spend the time to help me out. I REALLY wish I hadn't changed that battery, but it was starting to "sweat" and was dated 1984 so I thought it should be done smdh. :( Hope everyone has a good weekend and if anyone has seen something like that feel free to chime in.

Yay I figured it out-display and all of k5 working again! I feel like a horse's petoot. I managed to nick a trace with my screwdriver while prying the battery and desoldering. Got the trace figured out and soldered in a bridge wire and we are back in business! Mo, if you still want me to test that display I am happy to do it :)

Thanks.

Hi Damian,I am going to hang onto it now. If mods want to remove this post, it is fine with me. You may have some luck with the other guy offering up parts k5 units :) I am in the USA.

Hi Again,

Yes thanks for the tip. I did realize eventually at the bottom of the email conversation that you decided to keep the K5. (But just in case.... 😊 )

I don't want to repeat what may have already been said in this group, but these K5's are slowly gaining collect-ability, and your choice to keep it is wise. As long as you have enough room !

I am in the process of getting back into my K5. I bought it from the States about ten years ago, and it was full of dust and grass!? It has been working fine ever since, but I would like to do it up.

I am in Australia.

Thanks again, kind regards.

Damian.

No worries, Damian. Sound like your K5 was in bad shape like mine. Glad to hear it found a loving home and is being taken care of and enjoyed :) If I change my mind later on, I will contact you. It would probably cost a tidy sum to get this beast to AU, but I understand how it goes when things get rare. The "last of the V8s" like Mad Max haha. If you need something specific for it, http://syntaur.com/kawai_k.html#k5 has some bits and bobs. They are pretty reasonable folks and usually very helpful. Glad to hear there are folks out there that have the same digital jawa tendencies I have. Also, I have to know lol, how did you end up with yours and how did it get grass etc inside?

K5 Stuff

2017-08-29 by Damian Davis

Hi Again,

I received my K5 fro eBay around 2005. It was one of my first eBay purchases, and back in those days, shipping and delivery were still in the hands of dodgy courier pickups and postal depot issues. It arrived in AUS with broken keys, which I eventually glued back together. I was so enamoured with the sound, and back then VSTs that emulated it were rare. Camel audio Cameleon as the only one I remember. I got into the K5 so much that I was actually importing Korg Wavestation Wavesamples that sounded identical to the real thing! I can’t remember which software I was using but I’m sure it was from kfuenf ?

I’m keen to get back into it again, because I’m getting fond memories of the time. :)

As far as I remember, the K5 came from some Mid-western state from the US? I only vaguely remember at the time being surprised to find that such a rare machine was coming from such a remote part of the states.

Anyway, good to hear that other people in the world appreciate such a fine a nd rare specimen of Synth Tech. Kawai really did break the mould with this one, and the eventual K5000 series. Although some might say that such a piano giant had enough R&D cash to try such a radical venture. :)

Cheers, and regards.
