My K5m

2004-01-29 by capezzani

I'm new to this group, so wanted to share my experience with the K5.

I bought my K5m module on '93 in Buenos Aires, used it for two
years, then moved to Caracas. 9 years it lay on a box, until I dug
it up. It was all perfect except the LCD was dead. I opened it up
and saw a loose flat cable connector (Whew!). I then had trouble
using it in multitimbral mode, since I forgot I had to put it in
MULTI mode, selecting the individual patches and channels from the
synth, not the PC sequencer.

Really exciting moment when it all worked fine. I have a Boss DR550
drum module, and a Kawai KC-10 midi controller. Actually, the KC-10
is still in Buenos Aires, so I'm now using a lame Casio CT480 to
control the K5m (no velocity, aftertouch, pathetic.) I also got a
little 5 channel mixer to mmix audio. No effects, PC can do that.
I've written a couple of new age/techo songs with this improvised
studio. I'm not much of a professional musician, but composing with
this Kawai jewel is completely relaxing.

I'm using Turtle Beach USB MIDI cable, and Voyetra's Record
Producer MIDI. I have copies of Cakewalk, Cubase, etc, but I believe
RPMidi is enough, unless you want to add MIDI echo and stuff.

I also installed an Atari emulator and K5 Wave and K5 Pro software,
also the K5 Wave creator. All amazing software, really controls the
K5 realtime, letting you hear the sound evolve as you change the
parameters from the PC. Highly recommended!!, besides the K5 buttons
are really uncomfortable to use.

I got about 4 banks of single patches, but I'm sure there are a lot
more.

How about we all share out patches with each other? Could be using
sysex, but I really recommend using the K5 Pro format (*.K5s). I'll
try uploading the three banks I have to the Files folder. For those
who don't have K5 Pro, it's really easy to use, you can get all you
need from kfuenf.org. I got a lot of help from Klaus there.

A final question: my sustain pedal doesn't seem to work. I plugged
it into the Hold jack and nothing happens. Anything else to do on
the K5 or is the pedal plan broken?

Bye!
