My K5m

2004-01-29 by capezzani

I'm new to this group, so wanted to share my experience with the K5.

I bought my K5m module on '93 in Buenos Aires, used it for two
years, then moved to Caracas. 9 years it lay on a box, until I dug
it up. It was all perfect except the LCD was dead. I opened it up
and saw a loose flat cable connector (Whew!). I then had trouble
using it in multitimbral mode, since I forgot I had to put it in
MULTI mode, selecting the individual patches and channels from the
synth, not the PC sequencer.

Really exciting moment when it all worked fine. I have a Boss DR550
drum module, and a Kawai KC-10 midi controller. Actually, the KC-10
is still in Buenos Aires, so I'm now using a lame Casio CT480 to
control the K5m (no velocity, aftertouch, pathetic.) I also got a
little 5 channel mixer to mmix audio. No effects, PC can do that.
I've written a couple of new age/techo songs with this improvised
studio. I'm not much of a professional musician, but composing with
this Kawai jewel is completely relaxing.

I'm using Turtle Beach USB MIDI cable, and Voyetra's Record
Producer MIDI. I have copies of Cakewalk, Cubase, etc, but I believe
RPMidi is enough, unless you want to add MIDI echo and stuff.

I also installed an Atari emulator and K5 Wave and K5 Pro software,
also the K5 Wave creator. All amazing software, really controls the
K5 realtime, letting you hear the sound evolve as you change the
parameters from the PC. Highly recommended!!, besides the K5 buttons
are really uncomfortable to use.

I got about 4 banks of single patches, but I'm sure there are a lot
more.

How about we all share out patches with each other? Could be using
sysex, but I really recommend using the K5 Pro format (*.K5s). I'll
try uploading the three banks I have to the Files folder. For those
who don't have K5 Pro, it's really easy to use, you can get all you
need from kfuenf.org. I got a lot of help from Klaus there.

A final question: my sustain pedal doesn't seem to work. I plugged
it into the Hold jack and nothing happens. Anything else to do on
the K5 or is the pedal plan broken?

Bye!

Capezzani, (I don't know your first name, so I hope that it doesn't sound
disrespectful to call you by your last name).

I tried out K5 edit Pro last night and Caged Artist K5 editor. I must say
that K5 editor seems to be easier to use - but I probably missed something -
K5 edit pro doesn't seem to send my edits as I make them, but I have to tell
it to send after I edit, and also, it overwrites patches instead of using an
edit buffer... but I'm sort of new to the Atari GEM thing. I probably
missed something.

---- My Atari History-----
I spent my entire teenage home life during the first half of the 1980's
writing games and graphic editors and sound makers for my Atari 400 in Basic
and 6502 assembler (anyone remember Display List Interrupts?, but I never
upgraded to the newer Atari's when they came out, and wound up as a Database
Programmer...
-------------------------------

The K5 Wave Creator - is that something that will convert .wav files to k5
spectra? I had heard of some Atari software that would do that, but I
haven't had any luck in my web searches.

Thanks

Joel

The name is Mariano, I thought I'd appear automatically beside my
nick. ;)

You're right about the K5 Editor, it is a bit better than the K5 Pro
in that it let's you try the patch you're modifying by just clicking
the mouse on the screen (high to low from right to left, nice). The
good thing about the K5 Pro though, is that you can send a single
patch to a specific location, not always SIA-12.

Oh, and it's not K5 Wave Creator, but K5 Wave Maker (little mistake
there). You can get if from kfuenf.org, I think. It's a bit limited,
but it has some interesting features. You can even generate
waveforms based on the legendary DX7 FM synthesis. If only I could
understand the way it's done, I'm lost with those operators, and
feedback...It's not a wav-to-K5 translator (I'm still on the quest
for that filosopher's stone), and it only gives you information
related to harmonic intensity (DHG), nothing else.

Regarding my experience with Atari: only the game board, the one you
interted cartridges in (Combat, Space Invaders, etc.) I'm from '76,
so my first PC was the IBM.

Ok, see you all.

Hi!

I'm the author of the program. :-) I wrote it going on 6 years ago
now (man, how time is flying!). It worked by generating a single
cycle waveform using FM synthesis and performing a Fourier analysis
on the waveform to generate a harmonic spectrum that could then be
transmitted to the K5. It also had functions for creating basic
analog type waveforms, saw, pulse, triangle, etc.

This being my first post, just like to say hello to everyone and
that I'm glad to see this group formed to support the Kawai K5. I
still have mine, and it really is an amazing synth.

Hi,

Great to hear this group now counts with someone who has delved into
the deepness of the K5's programming!

I've listened to your vectorsample.mp3. Awesome!! That type of
control could be added to the filter's envelope, sort of a dymanic
filter you could apply to a playing pattern. Cheap version of an
effect's console. =(

Do you think you could share the patch your made us hear(or any
other patch bank you might have)? I've uploaded the patches I could
gather some time ago, in Dr T.'s format. (I think it's the easiest
way to edit patches).

Regarding spectrum analysis, which you program does to generate the
K5's harmonics, I've been looking for a decent software that could
take a wave sample, spectrum-analyze it, and return the intensities
of harmonics, but haven't found any. Do you know of any?

Thank you
Best regards,

I'll try to get some patches up over the next coupla weeks. I need to clean
up the two vector patches, then I'll be happy to put them up.

I don't know of any program that will do this. I'm considering writing a
program like this myself. It would be fairly simple by taking a wave file
that has been edited down to a single cycle. That would make it much more
manageable. It may take me awhile before I can start work on it, but it
would be a great tool for us additive synthesis aficionados. :-)
