K5M - garbled display/bricked

K5M - garbled display/bricked

2014-08-30 by Kirk@...

I've got a K5M that has a problem with the display - then first powered up it shows the K5M splash screen, but when it finished booting up, the display is garbled - showing ??? marks across the screen. At this point, it's locked up and none of the functions/buttons seem to work.

I've checked the PSU voltages and they are all good. I also opened it up and reseated all connectors. At this point it's dead in the water...

Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Thanks

Kirk

Have you checked your internal battery ?

Have you tried to look for cold solder joints on the PSU PCB? There might be some unfiltered noise if a capacitor isn't properly soldered. Since it reaches the boot screen you could try resetting the RAM but the only way to do so is by disconnecting the internal battery.

Yes, unfortunately. Or you could try to cut it out. At 25 years old, it's probably lacking voltage and might corrupt the RAM when the synth is turned off.

I'll open it up and check. Is pulling the battery the only way to reset the K5?

I'm not sure. I just know from experience with a few other synths that blank video is often caused by a failed internal battery. I also just read that the ribbon cable pins connected to the lcd can crack or break off over time causing some dicey electronics problems with the display.
