K5 ROMs

2007-04-06 by Beowolf

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew what features are addressed in ver 1.3 ROM for the K5 and 1.2 ROM for the K5M. I am not sure if I saw that listed in any of the mail. I also would like to know the cost of the ROMs.
I love the K5 and have since it came out. I have a K5 and K5m and one K5 for parts. I have worked with the B3 additive aspect of the K5. You add a pedal like the Boss Rotary pedal and you have simply awesome organ sounds.
I have the K5000 as well. I believe one of the additvie distorted guitars on the K5000 has the most amazing tonal character I have heard on a synth. I would match it any day against an electic guitar for its depth.
I am working up to the task of adding a new LCD for the K5M. I saw a nice detailed posting on this site.
I have been with the K5000 group but recently joined the K5 group. Nice to hear from such additive enthusiasts. Best way to go.
Let me know the details of the ROMs if anyone knows.

Hi Antoine, I'd love to update the ROM on my K5m (it's
running OS 1 at present). What do you think it would
cost? Kind regards, Rob.

Hi,

I have absolutely no idea for v1.3, but, if I remember correctly, quite
a few MIDI/SysEx glitches are solved between v1.0 and v1.2. I think
version 1.3 is only a minimal fix to version 1.2, there are about 50
different characters in the compiled binary files. I know, from posts
sent years ago here, that if we have 1.0, it's worth upgrading it to
something else.

Sorry if there's no list, Kawai itself might have it. I think there's
going to be more luck asking at Kawai of Japan, I'm going to send them
an e-mail now.

I never updated the K5's ROMs myself to tell you what there is
specifically, but since I've got a ROM programmer a few months ago, I
can do it. The chip I plan to buy is told to be 100% compatible with
what is currently in the synthesizer, and is told to work in my ROM
programmer.

Antoine,
Thanks for the reply. It is good that you sent an e-mail to KOJ about it. When do you plan to upgrade your own K5? How does the ROM programmer work?
Does anyone have access to the James Chandler sample to additive K5 program? It was an older K5 program. Chandler had included some nice examples of sample to additive including multis along with the program. Very powerful.

Welp, I finally remembered to check my K5M, and it has the 1.2 rom, so it looks like I am good - please remove me from the rom list.

Thanks,

Now that you ask it, I think I should upgrade my K5s before buying the
lot for everyone, to see if it works, and it would not raise the final
price for those upgrading due to customs taxes starting at $20.

My ROM programmer is a $70 kit to assemble(It doesn't come with the
adapter and interface cable at that price) that can work with lots of
different ROMs. I have to use it through the parallel port using the
special hard-to-use piece of software(At least flash can be reprogrammed
lots of times, trial and error is easily possible).

Hi Antoine,

Please could you add me to the list for a 1.3 Rom?

Thanks,

OK, you're there.

I think I'll fix the cost at $6 CAD per ROM, and the other fees will add
themselves over this :
-Shipping, which seems to cost $5.88 CAD no matter where I send the chip
out of Canada and US
-Probably some PayPal fees too.

Re: K5 ROMs

Hi Antoine, sorry for my ignorace but ... what is "CAD"?

You know, I have v.1.0 in my K5m and I've had problems with global
bulk dumps, an error message always appears, do you know if v.1.2
fix that problem? If so, I could be really interested.

(I'm thinking to acquire some el-oil backlight too and change de 56k
resistors some day)

thank you in advance. Best regards.

Alvaro (from Uruguay ... yes, a K5 synth came to the fund of the
dust-bin)

CAD is Canadian Dollar, it s worth about 0.85 US Dollars. I should start working on a different mod than the 56k resistors soon, because that mod doesn t work
