Re: [kawaisynths] Digest Number 136
2006-05-23 by Marc Ellis
I'm using different hardware than you.
But fundamental MIDI requires that your wavetable
be set to the instrument you're triggering - the K-1.
Cubase should have a set of patch maps or instrument
configuration files for various synths. I imagine the K1 is
in there.

Most sequencer software packages have K1 patchmaps.
If you're mapped to the Microsoft default wavetable and you're hooked up
to the K-1, God knows what sounds you'll be triggering.

I used
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1994_articles/jan94/kawaik1sequencing
.html to set up my MULTI A1 for sequencing. I presume I have to have
this pressed to allow my system to communicate?
I have the MIDI leads set so that the IN of the K1 connects to the
OUT of my breakout box, and vice versa with the K1 OUT/Breakout IN.
I had the signal permanently high this morning and then, when
leaning on the lead, the signal returned to normal. Still no sound
though. So, this could be a faulty lead?
I'd like to confirm something (because I am now beginning to doubt
everything); I should be able to plug a MIDI device into my breakout
box, load up CuBase and, with the headphones plugged into the
breakout box, hear the sound relating to the key pressed (depending
on the sound defined within CuBase - which is another thing I have
no idea about). There really shouldn't be a lot of setting up to
make the simple task of communication happen surely? Or am I very
wrong?

Okay, a little closer!
I have downloaded a small test utility called MIDIOX and sure enough
I can press a key on the K1 and hear the assigned instrument out of
th headphones attached to the PC. So, all the hardware is working.
The fault must lie in how I have my sequencer software configured. I
have been told that the DMX 6Fire wavetable is only useable if I
hvae the extension board attached (and I don't); otherwise I will
hear nothing (which I am).
I therefore need to assign the MS Wavetable but how? How do I tell
CuBase to use the MS Wavetable?
Equally, how do I then assign a particular instrument from that
wavetable onto the mixer channel I wish to record on?

K1 is far to old of a synth to have
implemented GM/GX I believe
