K1 and MIDI

K1 and MIDI

2006-05-19 by gazzanewpy

I am new to MIDI (guitarist) and trying to set up a K1 for someone. I
have the Kawai K1 with MIDI In and MIDI out connected, these run to
the breakout box of my TerraTec DMX 6Fire 24/96 (with In to Out and
Out to In). I am using CuBase 3.0.2.

When I press any key on the K1 there is a response within the mixer
but I hear nothing. The audio is working (MusicMatch and other tools,
including CuBase's opening music all play fine) but nothing from the
keyboard. I note I am meant to add my device but cannot find out if
the K1 is GM or GX. Any and all help would be gratefully received.

It could be any number of things.
How are your audio cables connected?
I don't have my K-1 with me. I wish I did.
But on the K-1 you have a MIDI Transmit channel & a
MIDI Receive channel. As I recall, it's in the
edit section for singles and you go Multi/Edit
A-B-C-D for multi patches.
have fun. I wish I had my K-1 with me.
I miss the greatest digital string pad sound

I used
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1994_articles/jan94/kawaik1sequencing
.html to set up my MULTI A1 for sequencing. I presume I have to have
this pressed to allow my system to communicate?

I have the MIDI leads set so that the IN of the K1 connects to the
OUT of my breakout box, and vice versa with the K1 OUT/Breakout IN.

I had the signal permanently high this morning and then, when
leaning on the lead, the signal returned to normal. Still no sound
though. So, this could be a faulty lead?

I'd like to confirm something (because I am now beginning to doubt
everything); I should be able to plug a MIDI device into my breakout
box, load up CuBase and, with the headphones plugged into the
breakout box, hear the sound relating to the key pressed (depending
on the sound defined within CuBase - which is another thing I have
no idea about). There really shouldn't be a lot of setting up to
make the simple task of communication happen surely? Or am I very
wrong?

Re: K1 and MIDI

Okay, a little closer!

I have downloaded a small test utility called MIDIOX and sure enough
I can press a key on the K1 and hear the assigned instrument out of
th headphones attached to the PC. So, all the hardware is working.

The fault must lie in how I have my sequencer software configured. I
have been told that the DMX 6Fire wavetable is only useable if I
hvae the extension board attached (and I don't); otherwise I will
hear nothing (which I am).

I therefore need to assign the MS Wavetable but how? How do I tell
CuBase to use the MS Wavetable?

Equally, how do I then assign a particular instrument from that
wavetable onto the mixer channel I wish to record on?

Re: K1 and MIDI

If your midi or audio is intermittent at the connection to the synth
it could be a bad solder connection at the synth's rear jacks. If the
cables got yanked or stepped on it usually creates a bad connection
on the circuit board where the jack is connected. Look at this too...
