Noobie in need of advice.

Noobie in need of advice.

2007-02-15 by ottiscan2

Hi,

I'm new to the group and new to editing and downloading to a K4 and
will apolagize in advance for my lack of knowledge. If anyone can
answer a few of my questions it would be a great help.

I have recently been using a midi interface (midisport) to edit
presets on my Bass Vamp Pro with its editing software and was
wondering if it's as easy to edit presets on the K4?

I have downloaded two K4 editors, K4win and the MidiQuest demo.

Will these tools be enough to do some editing in the K4?

Can I save the edits?

How do you get sysex files from the computer to the K4?

Are the memory cartridges for the K4 still available?

Is it possilbe to get a Hammond (hope that's not a bad word) sound
out of the K4?

These are probably fairly basic questions for you veterans out there
but a mystery to me.

I'm impressed with the K4's sound, I bought it for my daughter to
practice piano on but have since thought I could encorporate it into
some the songs I'm playing with my band.

Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

Cheers,
Lew

I use K4win it works like a charm to edit any parameter in the K4,
and works as a decent patch librarian. You'll want to make sure that
you set up the Midi section of the software to use the midi ins and
outs that are connected to the K4, and set the channel number
(usually channel 1) that the K4 is going to send and receive sysex
messages on.

I registered this shareware, I was so impressed with it. I think
registration used to be a requirement for editing the effect and drum
parameters but last time I downloaded it, it seemed to be fully
functional right off the bat without my having entered my
registration key. I'd suggest registering anyway, it's cheap, and
it's good.

Sending and receiving sysex messages is as simple as using the Get
Patch, Get Bank, Send Patch, and Send Bank commands from the menu.

Hi,

I am more of a newbie than the first guy. I just bought a used K4 and

load them to the K4. I downloaded the K4win software but do not know
how to connect from the K4 to the computer. What cables do I need? My
computer does not have a MIDI connection.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, yaros,
I'm a newbie and bought a used K4 too. Mine had patches in, but I could use K4win. You should have to use a MIDI cable that has the IN-OUT plugs in one end, and and joystick connector in the other one. This sounds weird, but you need that connector to plug it in your joystick port of your soundcard if you don\ufffdt have MIDI connector. Just remember to plug the IN jack in the OUT intake of your K4 and the OUT jack in the K4 IN intake.
If you have any doubt, just follow this link to see how the cable looks.
I hope this helps. Enjoy!

Hi! There are two ways to load patches within K4 or K4R. Using MIDI CABLES between the keyboard and the 'joystick port' of your PC's soundcard or connecting your K4 to your notebook through a 'MIDI interface'. You said that
'My PC does not MIDI connection' All computers has soundcard: a PCI soundcard or a soundcard included within the motherboard, as usual with the notebooks. The 'joystick port' of the PC's soundcard, by means of 'MIDI cables' (two cables) allows to transmit your K4 patches from the 'edit software' to the RAM memory of your K4 keyboard. No more is necessary. Additionally, there are suppliers who sell cards ( PCMCIA type ) with K4 patches. You must type 'K4 patches' to search. This cards must be inserted within the slot of the K4 panel
and follow the k4 manual instructions. K4 manual and 'original K4 patches' are supplied at 'KAWAI' USA site...Saludos.

If your computer has USB ports (Most new ones do) you can get a midi to USB
convertor. Much easier to use than the game port. My Dell did not come with
a game port so I bought the midi USB and it works fine. Mine is made by M-
Audio and has a USB connection on one end and two midi cables (in/out) on
the other. Very simple to use. Good luck. If your K-4 has NO sounds at all,
the battery might have died. It is a flat cell like a BIOS battery in a
computer. On my K-1, the battery was soldered in place and I had to get a
flat cell with leads tack welded on. DO NOT try to solder leads to the
battery. They fry very quickly and might even explode!
Good luck.

Keith
Yes it is the CMOS battery. However, I guess my reply was more for Yaros. He stated that his K-4 had NO patches in it. Usually indicates a dead battery.
Yaros,
Inside your K-4, I assume (if it's like the K-1) it will have a battery that keeps the programs that you stored alive when the unit is powered down. If that battery goes dead, you will lose all stored programs (patches.) Once you replace the battery, you can reinstall the patches and they will keep once the power is turned off or the unit unplugged. If you do not replace the battery, you will have to load the patches very time you power off or unplugged the unit. This includes the factory installed patches. Losing the battery wipes out everything. Hope this helps.

Jose / Deny / Keith,

Thanks a lot for your messages. I think it's great for members of
this group to help newbies like me.

I did buy an M-audio USB to MIDI cable interface and replaced the
battery (CR2032). Everything works now and I downloaded some cool
sounds to the K4. Now the question is where to find more patches?

Thanks again!
Yaros

If you don't find any new ones on the Kawaii site, you might find some on Ebay. There is a guy that sells CD's with many Kawaii patches on it. I got one for my K1, he sohoul dhave one for the K4 also. Most of what was on the CD you can find on sites in the internet. This guy just puts them all on one CD for you.
Hope this helps.
