Not true. They did a black sequencer called DSQ back in the 80's. I own the DDD-1, Poly 800 reverse, DW 8000, 01/W. I adore this setup, although I own various other synths and drum machines, but this 12bit machine (DDD-1) rocks. The only one (I know) capable of competing is (also mine) Yamaha RX5, but it's the same thing, 12bit (I don't like Rolands, I have the R8 and the TR626, and the SPD11. The sounds are pretty natural (except the TR626, which sounds like a baby toy), and that's exactly what I don't like about them!), so I use the Yamaha RX11 and Korg DDD-1 almost all the time. When I need REALLY natural sounds I use the 16-layer Battery studio kits, translated into Ensoniq EPS 16+ (capable of 16+ layering, can you believe the coincidence?! :))) and it sounds much better then any Roland, anyway....
