arppegiating the poly, sequencing, etc.

arppegiating the poly, sequencing, etc.

2004-09-23 by jisatsuboy

i'm sure this is nothing new. but i've been using the midi in/out to
arrpegiate my poly -- the midi out sends the signal to the program
which is set to arrpegiate, which sends a signal back to the poly.
i'm using Fruity Loops to do this, but you could use any good midi
program, I bet. It works really well.

My question: does a hardware equivalent exist for what I'm doing? I
mean, like a little box that you could plug your midi cables into and
select the arrpegiating mode or whatever. Cause that'd be rad.

Also, I'm trying to think of a cheap way to sequence the poly 800 in
a live setting (think way cheaper than a laptop). I had an idea...
that maybe sequencing software has been written for little palm pcs.
and as long as they have usb, the midi is a go. or some kind of
inexpensive little sequencer gadget. help.

Yep. Just search your favorite music retailer for "arpeggiator" - there
are plenty of standalone hardware arpeggiators. I was just tracking an
Oberheim Cyclone arpeggiator on ebay - went for $100. There's an Akai one
up now for $20 - ends in 5 hours.

There are also many sequencers for palmtops. Here's one:

I've been meaning to build that serial-MIDI jack for my Palm V
been using MusicTracker (previously PalmTracker) and if i get all
three tracks going it starts to lag bad :( damn 16mhz CPU and terrible
note multiplexing !

Alsesis mmt8 is a great seq tool I use it still live and quick little pieces just because of its ease and quant rate it can be a successfully tool. also an alesis data disk added to the deal make the back up storage you need and can even midi and be made to record the entire system and play it all back on the synths live. It has song mode and 8 tacks per pattern can be linked up up to 99 parts 16 midi channels on each track. Very cool and an easy cheap reliable way to use live gear or fast when you dont feel like running cu basis or cake wlk.An alesis mmt 8 should be only 100 to 150 bucks no longer made by alesis it is a bargain and the easiest sequencer to use on the planet. Alot of real musicians use them. The data disk and the mmt8 are the easiest way to create music and I used them before we had real computers worked like a charm live.
I still use them .And a laptop Sony vaio ...

I have an MMT8 that I got off of Ebay, and some advice if you're
going to buy one: the buttons wear out. The buttons on the MMT8 are
rubber buttons that have carbon conductive material on the bottom of
them that make the connections. This carbon wears off on the older
ones. In fact, do they even make the MMT8 anymore?

Anyway, I got one off of Ebay and the buttons were completely dead.
I bought a rubber button repair kit from an electronics supply store
and fixed the buttons and the thing works like new now!!

And, it's a great machine! Easy to use.

Anyway, be careful of getting one off of Ebay, if you go that route.

There is a way to arpegiate using a MMT-8?

I have one, that grey older type, bought it without the ac adaptor
from a guy that thought it was a gadget to sync digital mixers
consoles with a DA-88 recorder (it can be used for that too...)

it would be better if you go for the black ones, which are the
newer...

They didnt make a black sequencer did they .They made the black drum machine and the grey drum machine that looks like the sequencer almostexactly. the black drum machine had some 808 sounds that were ok. I never really liked the sounds but the drum sequencer rocks . Well anyways . Prove me wromng was there a black faced version of the mmt8 sequencer I say no .
Am I wrong.

Ive also owned a roland mc 50 mk2 it was good but to many bells and whistles I ditched it for cubasis and cakewalk. But the alesis mmt8 I keep. I hook to one of my 22 keyboards or racks and write alot of bass lines and lead off of it then jump it all back to computer . There is a miniture time shift to play with but not to bad you have to mess with internal or external sync. The fact that its fast and easy to use make it a music tool.
Remember less is better when making music one doesent want to stop for bullshit like the mc 50 is such a bitch to sync and to write with for all the bells and whistles get in the way.....I suppose its what you like in the long run.But for simplicity and for getting music made thats good fast my bet goes on the alesis mmt8.
For midid not much else forget protools. Cubasis and cakewalk my favorites. Im still not sure about logic. Its sort of screwy.
Who likes what in sequencing and why?????????Midi is alive and well...................

Re: arppegiating the poly, sequencing, etc.

2004-09-25 by Doctor

I personally use Cubase VST 5.1. Lately for shits an giggles I have
been syncinb my HR16b drum machine with the Poly. It sounds cool but
It is hard to get the sequencer on the Poly to play at speed that is
reasonable. It always plays too fast. Like 4 notes for every beat so
at 8 beats per measure, 64 notes per measure? Is there any way to
change this relationship on the poly side?
about the MMT8 grey black thing;
http://www.vintagesynth.org/misc/mmt8.jpg
is the only pic they have

Hi!

About the MMT8...yes, they did a black newer version... I saw a black
one when i bought mine, in the same shop, but i got the grey because
the guy didn´t had the ac adaptor and sold me nearly half the price
of the black...
Maybe i´ll post a picture when i find one...Take a look at MMT8.com...

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: arppegiating the poly, sequencing, etc.

2004-10-13 by Joshua Kalcic

Not true. They did a black sequencer called DSQ back
in the 80's. I own the DDD-1, Poly 800 reverse, DW
8000, 01/W. I adore this setup, although I own various
other synths and drum machines, but this 12bit machine
(DDD-1) rocks. The only one (I know) capable of
competing is (also mine) Yamaha RX5, but it's the same
thing, 12bit (I don't like Rolands, I have the R8 and
the TR626, and the SPD11. The sounds are pretty
natural (except the TR626, which sounds like a baby
toy), and that's exactly what I don't like about
them!), so I use the Yamaha RX11 and Korg DDD-1 almost
all the time. When I need REALLY natural sounds I use
the 16-layer Battery studio kits, translated into
Ensoniq EPS 16+ (capable of 16+ layering, can you
believe the coincidence?! :))) and it sounds much
better then any Roland, anyway....

it was the msq 1 or 10 in 1985 I had one that was midi a roland device very limited on getting a groove. I never used any of the dcb stuff roland had for midi like. W0orse sequencer in the world. thank gawd for the mc series and the alesis which came out and revolutionaloised music till laptops and the revolution of 1996 cakewalk etc.Till then we were not enjoying midi as much....The rx 5 is a big ass drum machine. The R8 is cool if you have the electronic drum card. Wish they would put more note memory in it....
Funny the rolands are quite warm. SO are the korgs. I seem to like em both. To each there own. Cool you got the reverse keys setup....I have one poly 800 full moog slayer potted by a very good tech friend i reccomend that for anyone really spices it up once you set up all the patches right .....
Msq 80 wish i could remember the first midi box i did use...I was like shit. Then we got the mc series the mc 300 and 500 before the alesis.....
Peace
Alien
