If it can't draw enough from the PSU, it will kill the PSU, if the PSU is rated higher, it will just not be working as hard - you can't force the current, it has to be drawn. Incorrect polarity, dead shorts, and other faults such as the wrong voltage will kill the voltage regulator (which is what I suspect has failed). Using the correct polarity, correct voltage, and a current rating equal to or greater than the requirements will be fine.
