Hi, I'm new here. I think I know why the battery issue is confusing.

If you look at the manual available from Old Crow's site, page 5 and
then page 40 seem to contradict one another. Page 5 implies the
memory is backed up by an internal battery (a battery other than the
C batteries), while page 40 implies that this isn't the case.
Somewhere, maybe here, I read that there's a capacitor that holds a
charge long enough to save the memory while the C batteries are
changed. That makes sense when reading page 40, but others who have
the 3v lithium battery can point to page 5.

Anyway, just thought I'd add this to the battery discussion. I just
won a Poly 800 off of Ebay and I'm waiting for it to arrive. As I
read more about the battery or lack thereof I'm becoming more and
more curious to know which version mine will be. I don't know if
I'll be glad it has a battery back-up or not. I know in any case
I'll have to replace the battery, or add a back-up battery because
mine needs "reprogram."

I just unloaded a Poly 61, and already miss it, so the Poly 800 ought
to make me feel right at home.
