RE: [korgpolyex] Korg Poly 800 issues - trying to do a factory reset, only get error message

2016-04-07 by Greg Coben

I've had the same problem with my original Poly 800 for years. I've also
found that the analog signal from cassette tape seems to be more reliable
than the computer or mp3 digital output, but honestly, until I read Daniel's
explanation below I never made the D/A converter connection. Theoretically,
saving as a WAV file should work fine, but it fails more frequently than
not. Of all the digital "saves" I have done over the years, I think only
one or two have ever "VRFY'd" successfully. The only reason I haven't done
a MIDI SysEx upgrade is because I'm scared to death of screwing it up.

Display shouldn't read VRFY when you load data - only GOOD or ERR.

Check this:

- Mono cable goes from output of audio device to FROM TAPE on Poly 800.
Don't use jack reductions, it can have bad contact.

- On Poly 800: TAPE ENABLE, WRITE ENABLE. Set level as necessary - on Poly
800 switch, and in audio device. Press LOAD button, start to play audio with
data.

It must work. If not, elimination method is the best to find a problem:

- try different audio device

- try different cable

- try different record

- try different level

I wouldn't use computer or MP3 digital player for playing data file - D/A
converters can change data. Any small old cheap portable cassette recorder
should work.

Good luck.

Well the title sums it up. A couple of months ago i bought a poly-800 mk1 in
very good condition, it worked perfectly - but then i forgot to change the
batteries so it reseted into only white-noise-patches. :(

Now I'm tryning to transfer the original patches back into the synthesizer
with a WAV-file from analog.no, and it does'nt work! I try adjusting the
volume, but I can't find one that works. Anyone here who have done this that
can share their experience? With lower volyme, the LED blinks, but it does
not give me any message at the end, still displays "VRFY". At higher
volumes, I get "ERROR", the higher the volume, the quicker the "ERROR". I've
tried to find a sweet spot in between, but there does not seem to be any. Do
you use a mono 3,5 mm cable or a stereo one? Do you have a wav-file that you
know works? And what kind of software do you use to play it (I have a mac)?
