Looking for "Tom Sawyer" Sound

Looking for "Tom Sawyer" Sound

2004-11-15 by genesisjoe2001

Hey gang,
Anyone know how to get the poly 800 to make that big fat E bass
sweep sound at the beginning of Rush's Tom Sawyer?
I can't seem to get the resonance to sweep.
Is this impossible on the Poly 800?
Thanks for the help....
Joe

Install the "moog slayer" mod...

Unfortunately, the MG LFO just doeesn't go slow enough to do that kind
of sweep.

I am pretty sure Rush used a moog or an Oberheim for
that. I am often after the same kind of sound. You can
get close to it by playing with the 3rd envelope, the
VCF/etc enveilope. But even then, the poly is gonna
have a stairstepping to teh decay which wont be as
smooth as the Rush tone you are speaking of. I haven't
gotten around to the Moog Slayer but that might get
you more in that direction.
But no you don't need a slow LFO to get that. Just a
long envelope on the VCF.

Yeah the low resolution of the DEG makes it pretty much impossible to get
a smooth, slow sweep.
