Kit installed, just a few suggestions...

Kit installed, just a few suggestions...

2008-05-13 by evy_newt

Hi Mike, I finally got my kit installed. Great job putting this
together, I'm impressed! Just a few things I noticed while going
through the assembly:

- Solder points and traces are fairly small / thin. I actually ended
up having to repair one hole that had folded over on itself during
manufacturing. I would suggest making the traces just a little
beefier since there's plenty of real estate to do so.

- Jumpers below note 2 in Appendix A are pretty close together. I
know you've modified the layout for the ones by note 1 already, but
these seem to have a similar problem. Is it possible to do a double
sided board to eliminate these jumpers? I think it would give a much
cleaner layout and it would definitely make contruction easier.

- There is no mention of installing the battery in the instructions.
I know this is obvious to most, but it may be helpful to note that the
kit will not work without a battery installed.

Other than a couple small hiccups, I'd say it went pretty smoothly.
Still trying to figure out the best way to mount the board in there.

Thanks again! I'll let you know how everything else works out once I
play with it some more ;)

Fantastic news! I'm overjoyed!

One thing though, you didn't mention if it worked! I assume it did.

Did you get "Flash" on the display. How hard was it to put those two
extra jumper wires in place? Did you get that right first time? Were
you able to download the code and send the sysex firmware to it
successfully? I assume that worked OK too.

If so, I guess you're wondering how to get all those new features
working and what all the new parameters are. Since you're way ahead of
me here, I'm going to have to jump onto my machine in the home office
tonight and knock out some quick extended and global parameter tables.
There's quite a few of them and they're not in a particularly well
organized order yet. Also, I added a quick new diagnostic feature on
the weekend that tweaks some parameters when you first upgrade your
machine.

I'll have another look at the jumpers and see what I can do on the
next batch of boards. The problem there is the cost of double sided
and plated through boards. It would force the price up considerably.
But I definitely agree that I need to tweak the board design to
improve it somewhat, especially increasing the size of the jumper
pads. Do you really think IC sockets are necessary for the RAM and
flash ROM's? Or should I scrap those and assume people are OK with
soldering them straight onto the board? I kind of like the insurance
of sockets but it does force the price of the kit up.

Do let me know if you actually saw "Flash" on the display and were
able to download the new firmware to your Poly 800. That would be so cool!

I have a neat (I think) HAWK-800 sticker coming out to you in the next
couple of days. Everyone that successfully gets their Poly or EX
upgraded gets a sticker.

Mike.

Yes, sorry. I guess you were doubting yourself? The download worked
like a charm! The only thing is that you reference EEPROM1 and 2 when
the files are 0 and 1... It apparently makes no difference what order
you do them because I did 1 first and realized there was no 2 :)

The jumpers worked out fine the first time. The pictures were great
so I didn't even count pins. I just looked at the traces and was able
to figure out where they went by that.

As far as the sockets, I don't think they're necessary, but I think
the first time you have to desolder 28 pins you'd be happy you had them.

So on to the functionality. Apparently only every other key on the
keyboard works now. Starting with low C it skips every other key. I
just was flipping through the programs and noticed something was
weird. What do you think that could be from?

OK I think I managed to fix it... must have been some junk code in the
global parameters registers. I just now figured out where those were
and they were coming up all alien characters. I went through and set
them all to 0 or 1 whatever the lowest number was and my keys started
working again.

I'm looking forward to that manual. I feel like Stevie Wonder right
now trying to feel my way around all these new features.

Global mode and extended parameters

2008-05-13 by korgpolyex800

Everett,

The files themselves contain a sysex identifier so that is why the
Poly knew which EEPROM each file was destined for but I'll fix the
file names on the web site - well spotted.

In the case of the keyboard only playing odd or even notes, this is
because the global parameters are set correctly for cascading mode.

Go into global mode by pressing the "Step" key while in program
selection mode. Then enter global parameter number 32. Set the value
to 0 (cascade mode off). Also, your joystick may not work if you don't
see the global parameter device type. So enter global parameter 34 and
set the value to 0 (Poly 800 MK1). There are numerous other settings
for MIDI, octave shift etc. You can try to work them out for yourself
but also, I will put together a sysex global dump for you this evening
so that you can set all of the globals to default values.

In the meantime, here are all of the global and extended parameters
implemented so far:

Global Parameters

To enter global mode you must already be in Program select mode and
then press the "Step" key. Press the "Step" again to exit global mode.

Global 11 is a global parameter that executes the command
corresponding to the global parameter value (enter the global 11
parameter then select the value of the number for the command you wish
to execute and then press the "write" key to execute the command).

	11 = No operation
12 = All notes off (if keyboard MIDI TX channel is selected then send
MIDI CC too)
15 = Sysex dump single selected patch
25 = jump into flash update mode
26 = jump into diagnostic mode
27 = using selected number (global 13) set all patches extended
parameter to zero
28 = Sysex dump global parameters

12 selected patch or parameter – 00-3Fh (11-88)
13 selected patch bank - possible values are 0-3 (for each patch bank)
– not used yet
14 Sequencer clock internal/external 1=internal, 2=external
15 Program change enable - enable=0, disable=1
18 Portamento fine tuning for slide

21 Omni on/off - 0=omni auto (on at power on), 1=omni off (including
at power on)
22 Keyboard MIDI TX channel number - 0=no transmit, 1-16 midi TX
channel number
23 Local Keyboard control - 0=off, 1=on
24 Local Sequencer control - 0=off, 1=on
25 Sequencer MIDI time code send 0=no, 1=yes
26 Sequencer MIDI tranmit channel (0=no transmit, 1-16 MIDI TX channel
number)
27 MIDI RX channel (displays as 1-16 but stored as 0-15)
28 MIDI soft thru on (1) or off (0)

31 Extended playing range on/off 0/1. Will set operating patch to octave 2
32 Cascading unit number, 0=off, 1=play odd notes, 2=play even notes.
33 Cascading sync on=1/off=0.
34 Device type 0=Poly 800 MK1, 1=EX800 and 2=Poly 800 MK2
35 Keyboard MIDI transmit note octave offset (0=standard Poly,
1=-1,2=-2,3=-3,4=+1,5=+2,6=+3)
36 Keyboard MIDI transmit note velocity offset
37 Sequencer note follow mode 0=off, 1=keyboard, 2=keyboard and MIDI

41 Joystick MIDI TX channel number - 0=no transmit, 1-16d midi TX
channel number
42 Local Joystick control off - 0=off, 1=on original, 2=on extended
43 Joystick X axis control change number send value
44 Joystick Y axis control change number send value

Extended Parameters.

To get into Extended parameter edit mode you must first select
Parameter edit mode and then press the "Step" key"). Pressing the
"Step" again returns you to parameter edit mode.

Stevie Wonder? - now that's funny.

Was I doubting myself? Hell yeah!

Here's a question for you. Turn off your Poly. Hold down both "Write"
and "Prog/Para" while turning Poly back on. Take your finger of Write
first then Prog/Para. Tell me if you get text "diags" or not?

Mike.

Re: Kit installed, just a few suggestions...

OK, you're using the version of firmware just prior to the last one
that I uploaded to the web site.

Also, I put SetGlobalDefaults.syx up their too. You can send that to
you Poly to get it exactly as it would have been for MIDI, omni on, etc.

I recommend you download the new firmware syx files (I changed them
from txt to syx to make it easier for everyone) and flash update your
Poly.

Then when you hold down Prog/Para and Write on power on, you will get
into diags mode.

In diags mode press 2 then write, then press 3 then write. Press
Prog/Para to jump into normal operation (11 P). diag mode 2 and 3 set
your patches and extended patch data to all zero's.

Then download your patches into your Poly using either Tape or Sysex.
Now your original patch data is in the Poly. But the MG is not going
to be quite right on VCF (because VCF has its own LFO now).

So, go back into diags mode by selecting global parameter 11 set it to
value 26 and press the write key (or use the power on method used above).

Now press 4 then write then Prog/Para. What diags 4 does is to copy
the DCO MG depth and delay into VCF depth and delay.

The process above lets you get your existing patches into the HAWK-800
with the exact same original sound parameters. And LFO1 (the original)
parameters are also copied into LFO2.

I'll write this up into a much more comprehensive document later.

Let me know how it goes.

Mike.
