Unable to send a SYSEX to EX800

Unable to send a SYSEX to EX800

2013-03-05 by benoitdmx

Hello all,

I am facing a strange problem with my EX800. I have the SYX file for factory (and also some SYX files I made after sending a dump request to the EX800 - note that it is a non-modded one, still original hardware)

When I send the SYX file to the EX800, the synth clearly receives it (the display goes blank while it receives the MIDI data). I get no message back from the EX800 then (it seems correct because if I change the checksum, the EX800 reports a dump error after receiving the file)

Here is what I see : if I edit a parameter (let's say param 18, set to 2 originally) and I reload the SYX file, the EX800 is clearly ignoring the SYSEX. The data I see in the changed parameters are still the same than BEFORE uploading the SYX file. It looks like the synth is ignoring simply the valid SYSEX data. If I reload the data from cassette interface, it works (the parameters I have changed are restored to original value)

Is there something special to send to the synth *before* sending the data dump (to tell him "I will now send you the RAM dump") ?

I am working on this problem since 2 weeks, and I am simply getting crazy. I can't understand why the EX800 does not take into account the SYX data he has just sent before

Is there a change between a dump going to the synth and a dump coming from the synth ?

Thank you by advance for your help

Benoit

You have to set the Program Enable switch on the back to Enable. If it's set to disable then the patch data in the dump will be ignored.

The same applies to the sequencer data in the dump. If the sequencer enable switch is set to disable then the EX800 will ignore the sequencer data.

It was done that way so that you could load up patch data but not sequencer data or load sequencer data but not patch data or load them both.

Hi Mike,

that's the first thing I have checked (it's on Enable). Moreover, I think that if this switch would be in Disable position, loading a tape would be impossible (not sure anyway)

I think you also need to set program enable in EX800 parameter - right?

Re: Unable to send a SYSEX to EX800

I do not think so (you speak about Parm 86, right ?)
Anyway, I just made a test with 86 set to 1 : same result. I can write whatever I want in the program parameters, it is never replaced by the sysex data.

To make sure that the Write Enable switch was not broken, I tried to store a parameter with the switch set to Disable : EX800 does not accept when I try to push the Write button (so I assume the Write Enable switch is working)

You have to switch to another program and then back to the original one
before you can see (and hear) the parameter changing. The active parameters
are apparently stored in a buffer that is not accessible by sysex (it would
be nice if you could edit that buffer from sysex, but the EX-800 doesn't
allow that).

Hello Achim,

thanks for the tip... It's the explanation of my problem!
(Bonk, bonk, bonk = noise of my head hitting my desk)

In fact, my EX800 is correctly receiving the SYSEX since the beginning, but I was checking the edition buffer content, not the storage RAM. It's exactly the same approach on the Korg DSS1 (you never edit the banks, you edit a local buffer containing one program)... and I did not remember it 8-(

Thanks again for the help

Benoit

I can't believe I forgot that! The tech support is getting really bad around here.

I guess the HAWK800 does not have any such idiosyncrasies?
