any (audio) devices can use these connectors, among them you'll find
outboard effects, such as Lexicons MPX range, or a number of channel strips
(dbx, Focusrite etc. etc.). for more "budget / consumer" products it is
common to only have a S/PDIF output, instead of complete i/o. actually, I'm
on the lookout for a channel strip that could also serve as a stereo
mastering processor (\ufffd la Focusrite Penta) with *both* S/PDIF in- and
output.

AFAIK S/PDIF is not for video, but for 2-channel audio.
