Well, as an example I have a DAT tape recorder with SPDF+optical. My Akdai sampler also has an SPDIF. Before the softsynt era I used to record the AKai digitally into Logic through the spdif at the AW8 soundcad. Sometimes I transfer mixes digitally from the AW8 into the DAT. Before I got EXS24 I used to record softsynts from a cheap soundblaster card spdif into the AW8 spdif and Logic (on the same computer). Some CD players also have spdif.
