I was reading some of the later exchange and wanted to revisit something: > nephew took the resulting photo of himself in front of the castle to school > and showed it to a teacher (presumably an educated woman) who asked him very > seriously if that was his ancestral home! This is akin to suggesting that > Chicago is full of gangsters in spats and that those fine people who bring I don't quite get this. What is so ignorant about asking if the picture is where some family ancestors dwelled several hundred years ago? It doesn't sound like the teacher asked if this is where his family lives now and it doesn't sound like his teacher assumed all Scots lived thsi way even way back. Sure, it's mildly fantastic, but no moreso than if someone from Chicago said their grandfather lived in Cicero in the 1920s and another person leapt to the question, "Oooh, did your grandfather know Capone?". No doubt it's rather unlikely but why not ask? I've seen people's names online that are the same as people I've otherwise heard of (one comic book writer, one musician) and asked each person if they were in fact the same person. In one case it wasn't true, in the other case I never got a response. But why not ask?
