mcdonald's pseudo-burgers, drinking pisswater-beer & being completely
ignorant of other 'cultures', eh?
*-)

a telling, 'funny' story:
some time ago, i was in a band w/jan garbarek (norwegian
saxophonist/composer) for a coupla years;
jan *really* hated touring in the usa --- (we only did that twice).
we were in a *nice* hotel in chicago, once, and jan was trying to telephone
his wife in oslo.
apparently, there was no way to dial directly from his room, so he was
connected to an AT&T intermediary international operator.
he gave her the country sode & phone number, and she asked him exactly where
he was calling;
he replied, 'oslo, norway'.
with no delay at all and clearly *not* disinegenuously, the operator
proceeded to further query, 'is that oslo, norway, sweden, sir?'.

Wow, impressed... I have a couple of his CDs and he has done some
amazing things imo. And what a wonderful sound some people manage to
create with their instrument. Really takes saxophone to another
level.
Did you also record with him? If so, which album? I might like to
check out _your_ contribution :-).

What! Impressed!!!!! I was more than impressed.
I was totally silenced.
I simply could not believe it when he casually said that. If my
calculations are correct then splattercell plays guitar and his "real name"
is David Torn.

David Torn, no less.
My God.

Played not only with Jan Garbarek, but also with Eberhard Weber, Mark
Isham, Bill Bruford, David Sylvian, Nana Vasconcelos, Jeremy Werbin,
Micheal Wellen, Marty Fogel, Terje Rypdal, John Surman (not sure about the
last two because I can't find the relevant albums) and a few other
luminaries and god-like figures like that.

I am still reeling that my Inbox has actually been receiving messages from
someone like that and I never noticed.

Sheesh. Still pinching myself.

Yeah ... don't know how I did it but ....
I forgot two other music gods that David Torn played with ... Lou Reed and
Don Cherry the Magnificent.

Pretty sure that this is splattercell.
Only he can confirm, though.
Going to look very stupid if I'm wrong, but anyone who's played with
Garbarek is quite OK in my book and I really don't mind looking stupid over
something like that.

agreed!

yeah, we did one studio recording, but.....
it's not a great document of that band's oeuvre (imho):
'it's okay to listen to the gray voice' / ecm.

Personnel: Jan Garbarek, sax; David Torn, guitars; Eberhard Weber, bass,
Michael DiPasqua, drums.
Don't think you're Garbarek himself although you could be; and don't think
you're Eberhard Weber. You are either Michael DiPasqua or David Torn.
DiPasqua also played on Wayfarer and you said 'we' did 'one'. I do not have
EVERY Garbarek record but I have most. David Torn only playes on 'gray
voice'. So ... my limited intellect (I long ago admitted to being wrong
about many things) tells me that you are David Torn.

I was reading some of the later exchange and wanted to revisit something:

I don't quite get this. What is so ignorant about asking if the picture is
where some family ancestors dwelled several hundred years ago? It doesn't
sound like the teacher asked if this is where his family lives now and it
doesn't sound like his teacher assumed all Scots lived thsi way even way
back. Sure, it's mildly fantastic, but no moreso than if someone from
Chicago said their grandfather lived in Cicero in the 1920s and another
person leapt to the question, "Oooh, did your grandfather know Capone?". No
doubt it's rather unlikely but why not ask? I've seen people's names online
that are the same as people I've otherwise heard of (one comic book writer,
one musician) and asked each person if they were in fact the same person.
In one case it wasn't true, in the other case I never got a response. But
why not ask?

Cool thingy! Check it out. Also for PC btw. And... shouldn't this
be posted to the regular LUG as well? Heck, I'll crosspost myself...
