Good way to get a cheap 6-string bass guitar?

2001-11-10 by Kool Musick

Hi

I do remember reading or hearing once, that a good way to go to get your
hands on a reasonably affordable 6-string bass was to get a baritone guitar
(fretted or unfretted as per choice) and then string it with some specially
made D'Addarios. If I remember, the type particularly mentioned was the
XL155. I could be wrong on the model number because I didn't write it down
straight away although I meant to.

Do any of you out there have any experience of doing something like this?

Seems like it could be a good way to go because from what I've seen one can
get perfectly reasonable (fretted) baritones starting at around the
$400-$600 mark (please don't laugh at me!!!). But ... I really wouldn't
want to do this, with my present relative lack of funds, if it turned out
that the sounds and possibilities were not quite what I wanted and that in
the long run it had been a waste of time and money.

I'm quite prepared to go down to my local music shop to see if they'd get
some of those strings in, then pick up a baritone, and plead with them to
string one up and let me play around with it for a while ... but what with
the vast experience that I'm sure is present amongst you lot, I kind of
figured that this would be as good a good place as any to start.

Any of you got any thoughts on this? Or done anything like it?
Do those D'Addarios do the job they're supposed to, or is there some other
set of strings that anyone would recommend. You get the picture.

Any input would be very greatly appreciated. My thanks is all you'll get,
actually, but I hope it'll be enough. (Well ... that and a mention in the
credits of the hit album that I'll create once I get such an instrument!!)

Thanks.
