I think they are plainly discernable, but they have to be pointed out by good teachers at first, and then you have to continue past the basics. Maybe its like appreciating fine wine. I can tell the difference between a $5 bottle of Merlot and a $10 bottle, but not between the $10 and the $30 bottle. I am sure there are differences though although I can't taste them. Or maybe a better analogy is literature. If you only studied grammar and had one class in Shakespeare which you hated, you would not know or appreciate the many great pieces of writing out there.
