What strings do you use? When I bought the thing about 4 years ago, I bought 3 packs of strings made by Jerry Jones himself. I have changed them once since then. the numbers are: lo A= .072 D = .056 G = .044 C = .030 E = .018 hi A= .013 that is a true baritone gtr tuning. the Fender six you were talking about with Gunn is not a baritone gtr but a "Fender VI", it is it's own beast entirely and certainly fine also. I think the baritone gtr I have (and subsequently any old or new Dano) is very different than the Fenders not just because of the tuning, but also because the body of the Dano is hollow, made of masonite, has lipstick pickups and possesses much more of a barking kind of sound (especially when tortured with funky vigor) than the fender, which sounds to me like a GIANT STRAT (also good). >> I know the Danelectro ones are way cheaper but >> they also feel cheaper to me. This one is made by hand in Nashville > Sounds good. I think that Splattercell only mentioned the Dano's because my > original mail made it clear that price was going to play a pretty big > factor in my final decision. yes I know that, and it is the reason I sent you the price I paid. > > However, I very much enjoyed your description of what it felt like to play, > so I'll make sure that I spend a while checking them out. And as for what > Splattercell said about the detuning and stuff, I might try that also. I > might even rip off the frets and go all Jaco Pastorius. Yeah!!! rip up the frets? yeesh, you're a nut, I love it. I used to have a fretless gtr that I made from a cheapo $50 gtr. It was sooo fun to play. but then the neck broke off when I strangled it with too much ferocity, oh well... Marine Epoxy is fun to play on. you also mentioned to Gunn: > I just kind of want to be able to play > some more lead line licks, little chords, stuff like that, but down there > in an 'oomphy register'. my response to that is: you couldn't find a better animal than the Jerry Jones (or Dano old or new) Baritone Guitar for this. Check out "Chain of Fools" by Aretha Franklin, that's Duane Allman playing the crazy old Dano Baritone gtr in the intro. Also many Alt rock artists use the Bari gtr for a bigger gtr sound on records (Soundgarden comes to mind)... my bari at times sounds simultaneously like Larry Graham's bass AND the guitar player's gtr (forgot his name) on Sly and the Family Stone records. Larry used a short scale mustang bass I think... with flatwounds... ya, like that yo, very nasty. I used it a little bit on my own record (shameless CD plug begins). If you want to check it out, it's at www.mp3.com/teddybut the bari gtr comes in 1/2 way thru the song on "Mommy's Got A Bipolar Disorder", "Happy Ending" has it everywhere, "We Gotta break Up" has it in the loud parts distorted, you'll hear it come in like a Wild boar at a polite dinner party after the second verse, and also at then end of "Get out Of my Way" it's doing the kind of Larry Graham thing, soft version. Hope you find what you're looking for.
