> tk>that is a true baritone gtr tuning. > dt: > except that there is no 'true' bari-gtr tuning! > personally, i like Bb..... I'm just going by what it says on the pack of strings that Jerry Jones made for the thing, I am not a purist and the presence of the word "true" in my sentence was not meant to be taken as gospel. I just meant to differentiate between the Fender 6 (which could also be tunes many ways, I'm sure) and the Bari gtr. maybe that's what Jerry thinks is the "true" tuning. Maybe that's how most Nash-villains tune it. Makes sense to me anyway since the word baritone infers that it be somewhere between a standard gtr and a bass gtr. I forgot everything I learned in music school so I don't know what a baritone range in a male voice infers range wise exactly, maybe you know. Bb, huh? I use a capo on it sometimes but I never tuned it up... from the "true" tuning that is (he he) dt: > actually, i really *like* the dano's, after a good luthier has 'set it up'; i > don't know, i have a fondness for certain funky instruments..... I could see that word "funky" going for the old Danos but not the new ones. For me there's a big difference between old and funky and new and cheap (funky?). Maybe when they first came out the old Danos were exactly the same as the new ones, but I'm too young to know. the Jerry Jones feels just as "funky" (in the garage/grandma's basement smell sense) as the new Dano to me. For me not changing the strings helps with the funk in the odiferous sense. the sound smells funkier than with new strings. I suppose it depends on who's playing it as to the funkiness of the rhythm. the reason I chose it over the Dano was because it felt much more solid overall. The bridge is more adjustable too, not that I've ever touched it since it came setup really well for my taste. I suspect the Dano's neck will warp over time (like the old ones) and I'd like to keep mine for a while. I do *like* the old Dano's pickups a little better than my Jerry Jones', a little darker sounding, maybe that has to do with aging... (?) what does dt think? coils? metal used? dunno... > tk>rip up the frets? yeesh, you're a nut, I love it. I used to have a fretless >> gtr that I made from a cheapo $50 gtr. It was sooo fun to play. but then >> the >> neck broke off when I strangled it with too much ferocity > i have 2 fretless gtrs; one very old, & one new godin glissentar --- but i > also play acoustic & electric oud, so..... glissentar... he he... I like that name, gotta check it out. what is the old one? Did anyone ever make them commercially before Godin? > tk>Also many Alt rock artists use the Bari gtr >> for a >> bigger gtr sound on records (Soundgarden comes to mind)... > afaik, kim t. (soundgarden) detunes gtrs, rather than using baritones. > and: lotsa altrock dudes seem to be playing 7-string gtrs, the last coupla > years. I know a couple of guys from Seattle who know Kim very well and they said he *sometimes* uses a baritone and also sometimes detunes, so we're probably both right. Maybe we should call him and ask him? I think I got his # somewhere. 7 strings seem cool too but those Ibanez ones *look* funny to me, kinda like a bad 80's nightmare I once had where I was doing the hoodleehoodlee VanHalen/Vai tapping thing and grew extra fingers and couldn't stop. ahhhhh. woke up in a sweat... > best, > dt / splattercell dt. I learned a lot about how to take chances on gtr from watching you play as a kid at the Bottom Line in NYC, you're one of my faves in the experimental music scene. I'm also a sarcastic smart ass guy from Long Island, Port Jeff... you're from Huntington originally if I'm not mistaken (?)... don't know if you're a smart ass with your mouth but you sure play like one (compliment). peace out, Teddy -- GO SEE http://www.teddybut.com and http://www.mp3.com/teddybut Kumpelstiltskin Music, Inc./EMI Music Publishing Burning Beagle Studios, Brooklyn, NY
