LAM: Logic on Titanium Powerbook

2001-11-12 by Gilles Ruppert

Hi all!
I am about to make a big step in my studio: I want to get rid of my PC
system, which was quite fine, but I need a more portable setup. So I thought
about getting a Powerbook G4, 667MHz, 512 MB Ram, 48 GB harddrive (5400
RPM). for the soundcard I am thinking about either a RME Hammerfall DSP (I
got 2 converters & need 24 channels for transfers etc), or the MOTU 828
(which unfortunately only gives me 16 channels..., but has mic ins).
Well for Midi Interface I don't know wheter I should get a Unitor 8 MKII (I
have the the Unitor8 MKI at the moment), or whether I should buy a MOTU MTP
AV, which has wordclock, the biggest advantage over the Unitor 8 (why the
heck doesn't that one has wordclock????)
Well I wanted to ask what experiences other users may have with a similar
setup & what soundcard/Midi interface they have. Furthermore I wanted to ask
how many audio tracks you can run simultaneously (I usually need between 24
& 32, is this possible???).
Another thing is that I make extensive use of software synth (ES1, EXS24
etc). When I use these, I usuallly run less audio tracks. Is the machine
powerful enough to handle lots of these?? (should be, regarding the
processor power, but I don't know whether it can be compared to a desktop
mac).
Any ideas, recommendations & warnings highly welcome.
Thanks a lot,
Gilles
