I think you are being unnecessarily harsh to be honest, James!

I've just in a bit of a panic gone through my cupboard looking for a disk
which I haven't had to use in years - I'm okay 'cause I've found it - but
these things are easy to mislay or lose or to scratch and then bin or
whatever - but as a registered user, with dongle, I never really considered
I'd ever need it again to be honest.

Denis is right - Mac users are used to only rarely having to re-install from
a CD.  I've transferred Logic from my old 8600 to my current G4 last year
using ethernet.  The only time I've ever had to re-install from a CD was
when a virus altered an old version of Logic and I couldn't use the updater
- and then I used one of my back-up CD's I make of all my music apps from
time to time.

I hope Markus has a sensible and reasonable solution for Peter (and any
others like him).
