Well, as we are going OT...

I think what people have been kinda dancing around here is this (f*ck
it, i'll say it, and they can come and sue me :-) )

It is *lots, lots, lots* more likely that someone who says they 'threw
away' their Logic update is actually one of the people that has obtained
a dodgy copy of a Logic updater and doesnt want to pay the full upgrade
price to Logic 5.

Personally, I doubt that anyone would be that stupid.
For a start some (but not all) of the update CDs required either a
previous installation of Logic Audio.
Also, I dont know anyone who is still running Windows 95 with Logic 4.5.

This means that anyone who bought (like me) Logic Audio back in 1996 (i
think) and has upgraded each time has also upgraded their OS. Each time
their OS is upgraded they need to do a fresh Logic install. This
requires (in my case) a copy of Logic V3.0, then V3.5, then V4.0, then
V4.5, then V4.8. Maybe one or two less, I dont remember exactly the
updates I needed... maybe I didnt need to install V4.5- i could just go
from V4.0 to V4.8... I stopped using Logic Windows a while back it all
gets hazy.. where is my wheelchair?

My point is though that the CD is *often required*.

I am not accusing anyone of anything but it doesnt look very likely to
me that someone would ever throw it away. Lose maybe... In fact I did
lose a Logic CD on the trip over from Australia to England. One of my
boxes went missing and I lost several original Logic CD's as well as
most of my original sample library, but I had backups and I was able to
get the XP installer for my little used Windows version that doesnt
require a previous version.
If I hadnt bought a new copy of Logic Mac then I might be complaining
too.

The thing here though is I agree, Jim. I simply cant credit that
someone can stand over a bin, after recently having installed Logic
Audio and saying 'I better chuck that out, coz I'll never need it
again'. Sounds like Bullshit, Smells like bullshit. Until given a more
convincing explanation... bullshit it will be, in my mind at least.

I'm a little over how much traffic its generated to be honest. Markus (I
think it was) has given an option to anyone who has *thrown out* their
CD. Lets hope the solution that is offered them includes some sort of
stupidity tax.

I've reread this email and I know it is sounding a bit on the harsh side
but... come on... it is just plain dumb to throw out a CD. Personally
even if I did throw out my Logic CD I dont think I'd tell anyone because
you'd all think I was a complete pillock.

I updated my MacOs (better: I freshly installed) several times from 8.0 to
now 9.2.2.
I never needed to reinstall Logic (or ProTools or whatever). I have copies
of the files that I know are important (items installed in the system folder
by an application, but thats mainly my DAE folder with ProTools plug-ins
and FX settings, NOTHING regarding Logic itself) and simply drag and drop
them after the new system install.
I even have at least the last 5 Logic versions completely on my harddisk
(what you would call "installed"), so I definitely dont have to go back to
the installation CD. And I have backup CDs of my working partitions (I do
that maybe once a month, and I throw them away after about 6 months).

Dont call that (or me) stupid!

If youre on Windows I know its different. But Im not.

None of this is true on the mac.

Hi there,

If you will properly read my post it refers exclusively to the PC, not
the Mac.
I am actually a Mac user and I do know how it works. Thanks.
Personally I use retrospect images on a file server and never need to
reinstall software either. One of the reasons I went to Mac in the first
place.

I dont know if you are the original poster or not, but didnt it EVER
occur to you that you might need the CD?
What if... i dont know... your images became corrupt... yes every one of
them...?
What are you going to do then?

Throwing away original CD's is unwise, IMO. And now you know why.

I think you are being unnecessarily harsh to be honest, James!

I've just in a bit of a panic gone through my cupboard looking for a disk
which I haven't had to use in years - I'm okay 'cause I've found it - but
these things are easy to mislay or lose or to scratch and then bin or
whatever - but as a registered user, with dongle, I never really considered
I'd ever need it again to be honest.

Denis is right - Mac users are used to only rarely having to re-install from
a CD. I've transferred Logic from my old 8600 to my current G4 last year
using ethernet. The only time I've ever had to re-install from a CD was
when a virus altered an old version of Logic and I couldn't use the updater
- and then I used one of my back-up CD's I make of all my music apps from
time to time.

I hope Markus has a sensible and reasonable solution for Peter (and any
others like him).

best,

pk

Now.
They should have clearly stated from the beginning that the CD is required
for updating as I said before and I surely would have not thrown it away.

WOw!

I am being tempted to go to the dark side! 8^) Being able to (un)install by
moving a directory is heaven!

I cant see this being the situation under OSX however being that it has a
BSD kernel...

besides, I cant afford a Mac (plus the fact that I couldnt find a crack for
LAMP5.0 tee hee hee :-) ). I cant afford toast right now :-(

when you have nothing be happy! it'll remind you how you should feel when
you've got it all!

I am not the original poster. But the fact is that since the system
is different for Mac users I imagine there will be lots people who
find themselves up the crick without ever understanding that they had
done something wrong. As it happens I still have my CD. But it
could have gone the other way pretty easily.

Hi,

Nice of you to be able to see into the future there, boyo.
Listen, I have seen some very strange things happen in my time.
A few weeks ago we had a directors hard disk and his backup server
lose all of his data. The DLT drive was slightly out of whack and the
tapes were not readeable, thanks to a junior tech being a bit sleepy.
These things happen.
The thing is here though that you are simply being intractable and
stubbron so I'll let you keep going here.

Sure, fine. Interestingly I pointed out that I no longer have an
original PC V4.0 as I lost it on the trip over from Australia but
Peter seems to ignore that...
Also, Emagic will probably have a work around for this.
I still think that throwing away the original installer for a piece
of software you paid a fortune for is unlikely, and dumb, regardless
of the install method of your chosen platform.
People will disagree for sure.
I bite my tongue on this list a lot, some of the shit that is spoken
here really has me shaking my head sometimes.

Tell me... does anyone rip their CD's to hard disk and throw away the
CD?
Still smells like bullshit to me..
