How about Sugar Hill Gang with Rapper's Delight?  1979.  First rap 
hits the record stores.  Before then, AFAIK, nobody had taken the 
music tracks from another band (they use a Chic song, forget the name 
of the tune now) and added spoken rhyme.

I'm not a major rap fan, just the first thing that springs to mind as 
a real trend setter after the Beatles.
