There's a trial going on right now related to "cracking" copyright 
protection. The legislation seems to work and US justice is doing a 
proper job on this. Obviously the copyrigth related industries are only 
sueing serious infringements. I don't think they'll sue publishers for 
publishing the tricks on how to remove copyright protection if it's just 
a simple tip like what has been discussed here. That tip has just been 
announced in an official music magazine in Germany: Musikwoche:

There is good European legislation on this as well, it's just that the 
European member states haven't ratified the copyright directive yet. :-(
