I use a Mac to listen to most of my CDs and I'm really burned up about this new trend. I'd love to bust 'em with a magic marker! -- Doug [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

OK. Choose this URL for the illustration: http://www.chip.de/praxis_wissen/unterseite_praxis_wissen_8725967.html free translation: Look for the 2mm line/gap on the back side of the CD. Cover the gab and part of the outermost track (the one containing bogus data) with a marker pen without touching the last audio track. Use a ruler. Try out. If it doesn´t work, the drawn line might not cover the whole gap, or it might touch the audio area. It´s a matter of 1/10ths of a millimeter. Wipe away the "pro-copy-bar" and correct. *** There´s another method using self-adhesive stickers, but I think the marker method ist easier and less dangerous (imagine the sticker blocking the CD drive) Please tell me if it works. I can´t try it out, because I own no Celine Dion-CDs or similar ;-) Yours Tobias

Probably an easy one for anyone using Windows, but coming from a Mac I just about know how to start an application and not much more... (and I've carefully & successfully tried to remain that ignorant for years :-). How do you associate a certain file extension with a certain application under Windows? I.e. just like *.doc files are "known" by the system to belong to MS Word for example. I suppose there's a Control Panel or whatever that takes care of such associations, right? Or is this something the application itself has to take care of somehow? Thanks in advance... Feel free to mail me privately btw, since this is _really_ OT, even for the OT-list... -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra <h@...> Omega Art: http://www.ision.nl/users/h/index.html

All you have to do is hold down shift, right click the file you want to associate, choose "Open With", choose the right program from the list (or click 'other' and choose whatever program you want), and tick the 'Always use this program to open files of this type' box.

The only CD I have in the house that has this protection belongs to my daughter. She told me I could borrow it but I didn't mention that I was going to color on it. :-) I'm working up the courage to try this on one of her favorite CDs to test this method. I hope it will still play on her boom box after I scribble on the rim. <G> -- Doug [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Hi, fellow CD.-copiers, it seems SONY made the next step. According to german and austrian sources they make the small gap invisible since january. I just read that informing about methods to crack a copy protection is forbidden by law in the US. So DONT read http://www.heise.de/newsticker/data/ghi-24.05.02-000/ (its in german anyway) As citizens of the still free countries in europe, we will keep our american friends informed ;-) But dont forget to delete our mails after reading... Obviously the copyrigth related industries are only sueing serious infringements. I don't think they'll sue publishers for publishing the tricks on how to remove copyright protection if it's just a simple tip like what has been discussed here. That tip has just been announced in an official music magazine in Germany: Musikwoche: http://www.mediabiz.de/newsvoll.afp?Nnr=114841&Biz=musicbiz&Premium=N&Navi=00000000&T=1 There is good European legislation on this as well, it's just that the European member states haven't ratified the copyright directive yet. :-( Cheers, Joeri -- Joeri Vankeirsbilck joeri@... Hi Tobias, >I just read that informing about methods to crack a copy protection is >forbidden by law in the US. This is not entirely correct. But in any case ... just because some fools in the US Congress (of which there are many, unfortunately) decide to pass a stupid law of some kind, this does not automatically mean that the US courts are in any way obliged to agree to enforcing that stupid law. >As citizens of the still free countries in europe, we will keep our >american friends informed ;-) Very glad to be kept informed. Please keep doing so. Personally, I find the whole thing absurd and a cause for wry amusement, but that's probably just me As for the "still free countries in europe" ... well ... I am myself a still-hoping-to-be-free-one-day-very-soon citizen of an un-named but not-yet-free country in Europe. Just which particular European country do you reside in that has managed to be a "still free country in Europe"? With my EC passport it should be no problem for me to migrate there immediately. Along with my religion and my race and my ethnicity. >But don´t forget to delete our mails after reading... Man but this high-level security top secrecy stuff is incredibly exciting. Giving me a real rush. Must go now .... got lots of swift deleting to do ... I hear some rather loud knocking at my door!!! Kool Musick Keep Musick Kool
