Here is a message from the Absynt list .... it sounds like OS X is becoming a 
MUSIC OS. Microsoft will never give this much importance to music :

I'm sure everyone has heard that OSX CoreAudio native device driver 
performance
is far superior to ASIO, which is why there aren't many ASIO drivers written
for OSX.

Along the same lines, Apple has just released the AudioUnit spec for plugins 
(I
believe it will show up in 10.2).  Given that this spec offers the same 
promise
for performance improvement vs. VST, does this not look like the best way
forward?

I think Apple is getting it dead right here with these OS-level services.
