hendrik's advice on RealBasic is good, but his caveat about the
breadth of control is also true. 

personally i would recommend the slightly harder road of Java. Youll
have more conceptual problems to tackle up front than in RealBasic but
its a fairly good language to learn on in and its got a pretty robust
set of libraries. OSX has good support for it and anythign you write
in it can, theoretically, be run on other platforms. Plus any code you
write, if its worth keeping, can be upgraded and reused as you learn more.
